So...recently got that email from newegg with the promo code for the EVGA GTX780 non Ti version with a price after rebate of $289? Worth it or just grab the 970 at $330?

I know the 780s use a lot more power, but in my area consumption is not a big deal and my PSU is up to the task.

Or should I wait for holiday sales? Not in a big rush.

Hoping for an X-mas price on a GTX 970 isn't the worst gambit I've ever heard of …

I don't think the GTX 780s will linger for years, the way the poorly-regarded GTX 480s did …

I just got A GTX 760 and I am loving it. IF you can get a 780 and can power it I would grab it.

Doh! The code expired so now it is back to $309. Like I said, not in a big rush. I am eaking out playable performance still on this ancient 650Ti at 1080p. Was just wondering if that was a good deal. I keep hearing the prices are going to drop, but they never drop far enough for me to scream "TAKE MY MONEY!"

I still have two of those GTX 480's running full time in one of the 'backup' rigs that resides at a friends house.

I agree with Goose. The 780s aren't just slower than the Maxwell cards, they're larger, much larger, and therefore are probably a lot more expensive to produce. Having more expensive cards that don't sell well is not a good situation for Nvidia, so I bet they did whatever they could to limit the GK110 stock that would stick around after Maxwell's desktop debut.

I would wait for the holidays if you can hold off, and even at current pricing, I would pick the 970 any day.

I've also been watching the R9 280x prices drop quite significantly, but a lot of people are reporting the artifacts are back so I am hesitant to go that route. I think I will wait for my Xmas bonus and grab the 970.

Edit: If they are ever in stock!

I love my GTX 780, and it plays most anything cranked to max. Of course, I bought it last year when it was brand new. I don't do any multimonitor stuff, though, so that might skew your thinking.

Oh god, the 780 is totally worth it for 293 or whatever. I saw the price jump down like that and took the opportunity to SLI and it was great.

No multi monitor here. I just run on My 23" Samsung. Don't have the room for more.

Three of the worst words: Not In Stock

You guys stop buying up all the 970s and I might be able to get one.

Thanks for the link, cheaper than newegg.

I have an auto notify set up when the ASUS becomes available. I like the fact it already has a backplate. EVGA gives the option to get one in the mail. Why it doesn't come with one I don't know. I also heard the EVGA needs a BIOS flash to 1.1.

GTX970, no contest. much better in terms of performance and power consumption for a little more money. not to mention Nvidia has retired most of the 700 series line after the release of the 900 series.

Where I'm from, there are places selling the 780 more expensive than the 970, which completely baffles me

Hi Golrar, I got myself a EVGA 3GB GTX780 SC last year, have to say I'm very much satisfied.
The reason why?

1. if you manually set the fan's to 75% (ok not really quiet anymore :-) ) the card maintains boost freq of 1084 MHz all the time, good for your FPS

2. I overclocked the I73770K to 4200MHz as well

Now why I'm telling all this?

3. MWO in 2560x1600 nearly always 60FPS (slide drops to 50FPS)

So, in my opinion the GTX780 for 300$ is a good deal, mine was 650€ - that's 845$. :(

P.s.
What I found out lately is, don't forget your CPU. MWO stall's or has sudden FPS drops do to CPU limitations, so a potent CPU could do more for you than a new GPU.

Anyway do what most suits you. ;)

Hey guy, two pieces of advice:

The best 970 that money can buy at the moment is the Gigabyte G1 variant. It's got a 6+8 pin config vs the regular 6+6, and really nice heatsinks not only on the main gpu chip, but also on the vrm's. The thing can reach 1500mhz on boost without a voltage increase. Also, I've never seen it go over 65C, and it is dead silent. It's a little more than MSRP, but I would say it's completely worth it.

Next bit of advice, the newegg in stock notification tool is much too slow. Normally it's good enough, but nowhere close with how popular these 970's are. Try using nowinstock.net , its really nice and quick about updating you about whatever store you shop at(Newegg, amazon, ncix, etc...). You can sign up to get email or text alerts. That's how I was able to track down the Gigabyte I had mentioned up above. Good luck in your search :)

I really don't get why the 780's aren't being discounted. The 970's beat it at pretty much everything, and only 1 or 2 shops sell them at something like 10% below 970 price. If I had a shop I'd dump em for 260 so they're gone before the 960 is released.

The 780's cost a lot to produce, so the bulk price is pretty high - if they cut price much more they're losing money.

Not selling them will be more expensive.

The 780's are discontinued. Best to get rid of them if you have them in stock imo. Nobody with half a brain is going to pay 970 money for it.
