It's all a bit vague on the calibers of the various autocannons so I suggest the following:

Autocannon 5 becomes 60MM Autocannon.

Autocannon 10 becomes 90MM Autocannon.

Autocannon 20 becomes 120MM Autocannon.

And I just want to add that yes double the caliber does make four times the damage. ;)

The AC rating of 2 to 20 does not relate to the calibre used on the weapon, but in what kind of categorie it falls. It goes from long range, low damage AC/2 to short range, high damage AC/20. They are abstract categories and not linked to specific calibres.

"An example of the rating system:
the Crusher Super Heavy Cannon is a 150mm weapon firing ten shells per "round" while the Chemjet Gun is a 185mm weapon firing much slower, and causing higher damage per shell. Despite their differences, both are classified as Autocannon/20s due to their damage output."

umm lemme think.

*5 microseconds later*

no

*nitpicker mode ON*
by the way from the balistics point of view you are no exactly right since you also have to consider loading of the cartridge, barrel length compared to caliber and if muzzle breakers are fitted, I am sure i forgot something in this non-comprehensive list.
*nitpicker mode OFF*

Yes we are getting rid of that inconsistency, an autocannon that does the same damage now fires the same type of shells just to make it simple for the MechWarrior so that he or she doesn't try to load the wrong shells in their autocannon.

And lets replace the machineguns with the following weapons systems:

20MM Rotary Cannon (six barrels) 6000 rounds per minute - does damage to infantry but no damage to mechs, may function as an anti missile system.

30MM Rotary Cannon (four barrels) 4000 rounds per minute - does damage to infantry but no damage to mechs, may function as an anti missile system.

Normally I'd agree, but the OP has a point. The Autocannons in the game are single shot cannons that have a long cycle rate after each shot. What the OP is suggestion does make a bit of sense. They're not really Autocannons anymore, but Autoloaders. I think the OP was commenting on the Single-Fire vs Burst-Fire.

PS... This post is beating a dead horse.

AC/20 eats AC/20 ammo, no matter if the actual weapon is a 185mm, 150mm or 90mm gun. You can't go wrong with the current system unless you can't read... in which case renaming them would not solve this non-existing issue either. So the fear, that mechpilots might load the wrong shells because of the lack of info on the calibre of the used gun is unfounded.

On a sidenote, i can't realy follow you why you would split the 'catch-all' term machinegun into two very specific subcategories that both do exactly the same in gameplay terms.

Ah..... you do know that 20mm and 30mm m-gun rounds strip threw armor in real life right?? Ever heard of the A-10? it packs a 30mm m-gum and eats tanks for lunch with it. What makes you think a mech's armor would fair any better?

And I too have to say no to the renaming of the AC's. If you can't read and understand that you can't load a AC20 round into an AC5 then you should uninstall the game and stick to Mrs. Pacman

Five and Six being the most relevant I think.

MODERATOR AMMENDMENT: The poster is attempting to illustrate why autocannons should be renamed in these links.

Top armor on a tank is like one inch (25.4mm) thick and the gun on the A-10 uses radioactive super-armor piercing (depleted uranium) rounds.

In what way does knowing the calibre of a weapon actually help?

In what way does the current naming system confuse/misinform?

FuturePerfect: Did you seriously like your own posts?

On topic: What does this add to the game? It's not like the current system is confusing.
