Since the patch prior to this one I had to run the repair tool once in order to get the MWO launcher to start. Since this patch the workaround does not work anymore, the launcher will not work.

So I tried a reinstall of the game. During reinstall with the patch button I got the MD5 hash error, so I installed the game with the Repair Tool. Still the same issue. Getting this error message:

Can you provide your frontend patcher logs from when this happens? This file is called "frontend_pacther_log.txt" and is in the [Game Install]\Bin32\PatcherLogs folder. The simplest way to navigate to the Bin32 folder is to right-click the MWO desktop (or start menu) shortcut and click "Open file location". You should see the PatcherLogs directory right there.

All that's there is this :

21-Apr-15 10:32:26 PM - main - Config file: C:\MechWarrior Online\Bin32\PatchBot.cfg
21-Apr-15 10:32:26 PM - main - Setting null proxy to False
21-Apr-15 10:32:26 PM - main - Local frontend version: 216
21-Apr-15 10:32:26 PM - main - Checking patch inventory.
21-Apr-15 10:32:26 PM - main - Connecting for maintenance check.
21-Apr-15 10:32:26 PM - main - Fetching patch inventory data..
21-Apr-15 10:32:26 PM - main - Remote frontend version: 216
21-Apr-15 10:32:30 PM - patch - Complete!
21-Apr-15 10:32:30 PM - main - Complete!
21-Apr-15 10:32:34 PM - main - Attempting to start game client...

I've tried the repair tool numerous times, it doesn't find any errors. I've updated DotNet to 4.5.2.

Done all of this :

Quote

regsvr32 atl.dll
cd C:\WINDOWS\eHome
ehSched /unregServer
ehSched /service
ehRecvr /unregServer
ehRecvr /service
ehRec.exe /unregServer
ehRec.exe /regserver
ehmsas.exe /unregServer
ehmsas.exe /regserver

So I got my game working again.

Luckily I do automatic backups - so I restored the files from the earliest date possible - 4th April.

Ran the older MechWarriorOnline.exe, launcher loaded and wanted to patch. Quit that, then ran the newer MechWarriorOnline.exe and now it's working..

Yeah.. now it's broken again.

I launched, logged in and messed around in the mech lab, logged out. Now it's doing the same thing. Even the older backup is crashing.

Looks like the version file is missing. Pay particular attention to frontend_version.dll when you're swapping files back and forth from your backup. If this file is missing, then the patcher will assume you've just installed the game and will start downloading the ~7GB install base.

What sort of issues are you having with the repair tool?

The repairtool runs normal, checks the files:

Scan complete!
No mismatches were found!

Fixing mismatched files.
-Fixed!
Cleaning unneeded files.
-Cleaned!
Cleaning FE textures.
-Cleaned!
Cleaning shaders.
-Cleaned!
Done!

Since the install with the patch button in the MWO launcher resulted in a Hash error, I installed the game with the repairtool as a thread in the workaround forums suggested. But the launcher will not start, same error as with my old installment (see above).

frontend_version.dll has File version 1.216.0.0 when looking at Properties/Details.

Like I said in the post above, the problems started with the patch prior to this one, I had to run the repairtool everytime I rebooted my system to get the launcher to work. Then the launcher would start. But since the latest update the launcher will not start at all.

I did the "pre-patch" repair couple of days ago, but didn't finish all the files. (Long story). Post patch, I ran the repair tool again and it downloaded everything from scratch. Today I tried to launch and then I started getting these errors with the launcher (Post patch).

Currently if I run the repair tool from post patch, the repair tool doesn't pickup any errors.

Can you backtrack a bit through the patcher log backups to see if you can find the one that's generated when you have this particular problem with the patcher. If you go into the PatcherLogs\backups folder and sort them by date, typically the simplest way to find the log I'd be looking for is to look for one since the patch update yesterday that's larger than the rest (bearing in mind that I'm still looking for frontend patcher logs, not bootstrapper ones).

Also, you can determine the patch number contained in frontend_version.dll by right-clicking it, opening the properties, and looking in the details tab.

I checked through my backups, the only big one recently was on the 9th of August, the newer ones are all like what was posted previously.

Post patch file version - 1.216.0.0

I don't think there will be a patcher log as I never updated the game via the launcher?

*edit*

After much restoring older backups and fiddling with files, I think it's the actual MechWarriorOnline.exe that's borked? Soon as the size changes to 792kb (809,752 bytes), I am getting errors. An older version of the .exe (791 KB (810,264 bytes)) is launching the launcher.

With using the older .exe and then running the repair tool, it is finding the .exe as mismatched and replaces it with the newer one. When launching the "fixed" .exe, it is crashing as per the OP.

Hey guys, just did some quick tests, MechWarriorOnline.exe from the april 21th patch apparently crashes because of a non-existent temp directory normally used (and created) by the patcher.

Check your registry at 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online\Production', find the value TEMPFOLDER and create the path it points to, the launcher should run again afterwards.

Right.. Seems to have worked. Recreated the temp folder and ran a repair again, downloaded the newer .exe. It's now launching. I normally wipe the temp folder after a patch is done..

Will do some more testing tomorrow, but preliminary results are good.

How on earth did you figure that out? Would never have guessed that. I got as a far as pinpointing the .exe lol.

I had a hunch regarding the patcher - and: 'when in doubt run procmon' ;)

Thx for the info, too bad I just deinstalled because I thought I should use the patch option in the launcher to get the game installed correctly. Since then I had the Hash error again and it tries to download the 7 gigs again. Really getting fed up with this, all the while my active premium time is ticking down.

I've fixed this issue and will be pushing out an update with the fix soon, once I get our QA guys to do some testing on it. Thanks for tracking the problem down!

Thank you Ace for tracking the problem down. The launcher works now, since I used the patch button to install the game and during the patch the temp folder was created. Good job :)
