Have you installed the game? If you have. Then you just launch the client, click the blue "play button", log in, select a mech, and then click the "play now" button.

Also, your first 25 matches you will have extra income, SAVE EVERY PENNY. It totals up to 10 million C-Bills, which will be enough to get a customized first mech.

Select a mech.

To be specific, from the main screen after you log in click "mechbay" on top, choose mech by clicking on it. You can mouse-over the mech for some details, but if you're not familiar with Battletech don't bother with the finer stuff for now (keep that for much later).

when you do load up the game, and pick a trail mech, from the main home tab, click on training grounds, and launch into all those maps at least once, while you play around with different mechs.. though i would say, play um all a few times.. those 4 hours you spend in there trying different mechs, learning the maps and such will make you a way better player and maybe you won't be dead in the first 2 mins.

though sometimes that isn't bad.. just spectate and watch how the game is played, hop around to different mechs and see load outs, and different styles of play.

in training grounds, practice using your weapons with out over heating, and targeting mechs while on the move, and circle fight them, and practice twisting way and twisting back on cool downs as well like you would in a real match

download the patcher (big blue play now button near the top right of the screen)
run the patcher, it then installs the patcher
patch the game, it will download about 6GB then install the game proper, this could take several hours depending on your internet connection
click the play button, press space a few times to skip the logos (unless you want to watch them)
login with your username and password
play the tutorial (not required but recomended)
chose a Mech in the Mechlab
go to the home tab and launch the testing grounds, (not required but recommended) pick a map and practice attacking the target Mech, when all Mechs are destroyed and you get board of running around the map press [esc] to bring up the menu and chose quit match,
repeat with different Mechs and maps until you find a Mech you like (again not required but recommended)
when you are happy you can hit a Mech with your weapons while moving at top speed (a skill worth developing in the training ground) find the "play now button in the top right of the screen and click "play"

try to avoid dying horribly within the first 2 minutes, it will take practice before you are able to do much more than survive with maybe 100 damage done and a few assists but with perseverance it will come.

do not buy a Mech until you have revived the achievement "cadet bonus 25" by which point you should have well over 8 million for your first Mech, just bear in mind if you purchase an Inner Sphere Mech you will probably need at minimum 2 million cbills left over to refit it, if it is a Light Mech you will want far more than that

Do not forget to look at smurfy before you buy your first mech. Here you can make configs.
Look at torso twist both up/down and to the sides on all variants of a mech.
Quirks. Engine caps and who knows what else i forget to mention.

http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/

Remember not to only look at the quirks, firepower, armor limits and such.
The torso twist limitations is something extremely important that a lot of players forget to take into account when selecting a mech.
It's extremely important for when you brawl at close range.

Edit: Oh yeah...get used to having your arms unlocked early on to get an advantage for your later MWO career.

Having your arms locked means they aim in the exact same spot as your torso weapons.
Which means you can't aim lower than your torso allows nor aim to the side of the torso aiming reticle.

Some keep unlocking the arms by pushing a key and otherwise keep them locked saying they get more focused firepower.
True to a certain sense but not the ultimate truth.

I saw a Dragon with a close range weapon selection who had his arms locked get slaughtered by a long range Catapult with only backup weapons.

The Dragon was standing on top of a small hill trying desperatly to shoot down at the Catapult who was 20 meters away from him.
He couldn't bring his weapons low enough.

Butchered even though he had all the advantages because he had his arms locked.

You can unlock the arms in the settings.

You can toggle 3rd and 1st person view there too by the way.
1st person gives you a map to look at.
3rd person gives you a little better awareness of where the shots are coming from, but there is a drone with a red light flying after you.
Snipers love those red lights that can be seen at very long ranges.
