Currently we can only like posts which add to user reputation (for lack of a better word). For the system to be truly functional a dislike option must also be present; otherwise there is no counterbalance to the system as everyone only progresses.

It is simply a natural evolution of what the forums already have.

I understand why you would want it since there has been a bunch of troll threads showing up lately.
But if this is implemented then the guy making those troll threads would just get one more powerfull tool in his toolbox.

THIS.

I've been a part of a forum that implemented a sort of "dislike" system, and it quickly turned into the easiest way for trolls to **** on decent users. It only fosters grudges, and is generally detrimental to boards overall. Personally, I don't even think we need a like button, but I suppose every website from now on is going to have one thanks to Facebook.

Please don't turn this into the same argument that ravaged facebook when the like button was added there...

EDIT: It would serve no useful purpose other than to create animosity. Besides, you tend to find out quickly around these parts if people don't like your posts.

Well clearly a tool like this would be useful to all and should be added, IMO. Trolls can be dealt with by the "Report" feature at the bottom of each post. Enough of us reporting such trolls will take care of them once and for all. Until more people do it, the trolls just get keep getting fatter. To that end, giving us a Dislike feature that we can utilize for the downranking of the daily "OMGZORZ LAZUR BOATS R HAXX" threads can certainly be useful now, instead of later.

This already popped up if anyone wants to search and was soundly defeated. Reason: Unproductive thought suppression.

this is the best option to the like button. THANK YOU.

Like combatplayer says here... if you dont like something someone says, ignore it. This is better than a dislike button. And even if their was a dislike button... those dislikes would have to be anonymous as we all know there are a few of us here that if they see someone disliked one of their posts or threads, the disliked person would more than likely go right back and dislike something of the other guys and then we would have forum wars way worse than what we get now in some threads. The system is good as is.

No real arguments against have come up – it all comes down to you not liking it, which while valid is no different than I like it.

Essentially ‘if you dislike something ignore it but if you like something like it’ is simply a flawed system. Indeed, by the same logic you should be ignoring this…

Ultimately, Dislike, Ignore & Report should all serve different functions – a distinction which is currently lacking.

Even without it, can we at least disable the system allowing for you to "like" your own posts?

I suppose the whole 'Troll's tool' thing isn't an argument against it?

To see what 'Dislikes' turn a forum into, see the League of Legends forum. Its basically a troll factory.

OP: Let's call it what it is and agree that we disagree.
The dislike function is mild censorship at best and a tool for trolling/griefing/slandering at worst.

Anybody with a bit experience in that field can tell you that the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages. That is if you have at least a minimum of respect for the people online. The ignore function exists for a very good reason.

To quote myself from the other thread:

"No. Having positive/negative options makes the forums less friendly and makes them loose all good manners towards those of other mind (I'm the only one right and try to disagree with me!, etc.).

With only "like" option, it is viewed mostly as a compliment for a good constructive post, great idea, good joke, piece of art, etc. It is a compliment, not " I agree with this!" button. Posted Image

...

Well, you are partly right, but if you look at it from the other perspective, not having an option to generally dislike something means the only way to express it is through a well thought comment that should either: Prove the poster wrong, or prove others that he is wrong.

And that leads to a better, more constructive community, where even trolls have a place (only literally, ofc.). Posted Image "

Also, now with Goons in here and their severe childish use of teh current system and "like-ing" every stupidity, just to support their cause, do you really think dislike button would've helped? Anyone of different mind would instantly get shut-down, since if someone implements a "dislike" function, it generally has a set ammount of hits until the post gets deleted, or just hidden. :D
