Well yes and no.. It really depends on the map, and position.. I can think of a few places on caustic, alpine, and Tourmline, that you can do the really long brawls.. I'm sure you know the open areas on either side of the circle (theta) in the desert, or coming up the hill or the lower flat alpine, heck even up before the tower pass is another great spot. On the other side the the chute, or the rarely used area farther to the right of it as you march up the hill, often people use that area to climb up onto the hill above the upper base, but that lower area is a huge wide open area. I know i have had some great battles in that spot when a couple mechs meet, of a only a few left.

A few spots around the crater on caustic too are pretty nice as well.. Most of the other maps don't really have spots like that. Though even the new river city and forest colony do have some open spots like that, but i have yet to have people fight in um.

But like leone said, Brawling is a lot more about a style of combat, verse a range IMO.

interesting topic though :) It does make me wonder what PGI can do to make brawling more appealing. I enjoy the idea of longer fights, lower alpha's and the constant slug fest of a good hot brawl!

I understand, and for me it's both about style and a range. At long range (600+), I don't consider it brawling, myself. I see that as a skirmish, more than a brawl.

At the end I look at the weapons that are classified as "brawling weapons", and they all have 270 meters max range. Because TECHNICALLY, you can brawl with an ERPPC. However, the ERPPC is NOT a brawling weapon.

I also remember when brawling in BT meant you got your Atlas to their adjacent hex, and punched that silly Direwolf right through the cockpit.

Hello.

Im the OP.

So in the strictest sense i.e. brawling is sub 270m, when Im sub 270m in my TBR thats sporting Cermls and CLpls, Im actually doing it wrong and should back off a bit?

Depends how you're firing them and how many you have. But I'm inclined to agree. The LPLs in particular don't have a fantastic cooldown time (ie a bit too long) for being too close to avoid enemy fire without dishing anything back. I think that's why SPL lights do so well in very close ranges. But I could be wrong or other people may find ways of making it work, that's just how I'd play it

no, you are not doing it wrong, that load out can effectively engage an enemy at any distance between 0 and 405 meters, after 405 your ERML start to become less effective but at 600m your ERML still deal half damage.

so to reiterate your Timber Wolf is absolutely fine brawling at 50 meters, the only problem with that is other Mechs are likely to have better heat capacity possibly making them more effective at close range.

just because you have more range does not make it a mistake to close

the only range you should care of it's the range of your weapon

You're fine. I'd recommend not firing all the lasers very often. You need some serious trigger discipline, because clan lasers tend to be hotter.

Your build is a monster of a skirmisher, since anything up to 400 or so meters gets hit hard by it. Close range is where clan mechs usually start to lose, because they are very toasty. However, you can still brawl effectively with that mech, if you control your firing rates. Fire the ER-mls more often than the LPLs. Never let your heat break 95%, and keep on twisting until you're back down below 85% before you fire anything more than 2 ERMLs.

It's a solid build, and can brawl, but I wouldn't call it a brawling specialist (using ERSPLs, ERMPLs, and ERSLs would be more focused on short range brawling).

TL;DR: Your build is good, it's better at above 270 meter ranges, but it's fine in short range fighting, so long as you have decent trigger discipline.

If you love brawling with that build, then I would just recommend using the coolshot consumable, to help you in high heat emergencies.

If your having fun, your not doing it wrong. Now, if you spend the whole fight at that range, your not utilizing the full strength of your build, but it's not like your doing less damage or anything. You'll be fine going up against other ranged builds, and be outgunned by shorter ranged builds, that is all.

For instance, take an ac 20 jager. Niche build, great pinpoint damage, would probably out trade you up close, but helpless against your build at 500 meters. You'll do okay at close combat, other'll do better, but inorder to do better close in, you hafta sacrifice that nice ranged set up. Trade offs.

I always think of brawling as being stood toe to toe, right in the face of your opponent, but I think in MWO its not the same.

What is the "brawling" range in MWO?

Is "toe to toe" brawling ever a planned encounter or is it one of those unfortunate events in a battle where you end up squaring off against whoever happened to come around the corner and its too late/ risky to try and disengage?

Many thanks

IMO:

A style of play or a tactic.

Close enough for heavy SRM use/SMPL use + too slow to be a striker(hit and run). @250m or less. 70KPH or less.

Though, Any faster mech can opt t brawl i guess.
