Practice your aim!
Just for old times sake, here's one legend giving some practice tips:
Here's couple of online trainers:
Fast aiming - To get your cursor on target as soon as possible
http://aim400kg.com/fa/
For laser builds to keep your aim at target component
http://aim400kg.com/ea_v2/
Check your mouse sensitivity
You need to keep it low for precicion aiming, otherwise you spread alot of damage. Make big movements (up to even 20cm) on the mouse mat to torso twist and smaller movement on aiming. Take time to find the sweet spot for yourself! Which brings us to next point...
Buy yourself a proper mouse mat
Toss that 20x20cm piece of trash away! Get something like 30x50. I use big drift cus I like it smooth
Hope this helps!

20cm?! Wow... My range of movement has not been much beyond 2cm. My wrist never needs to move. But it's difficult for me to consistently have the finesse to quickly aim accurately. I'll try out those aiming trainers. Thanks!

Found mine from the nearby trash here in the "projects". It was nice corner table for CRT so I salvaged it for my personal use. Just used some sandpaper, cleaned it up and reinforced some parts and it was perfect.

aim400kg.ru is a really good aiming training site to use. If you have a copy of CS:GO on steam you can download the map training_aim_csgo2_dark by statistheory from the workshop, its basicaly the same minigames as aim400kg.ru with the bonus of using an in game crosshair.
Also, for those of you who play alot of other FPS games and find it hard to normalize MWO's mouse sensitivity to other games, just get your 360 degree rotation in inches using a calculator site (like this one for CS:GO http://www.notalent....sensitivity.htm) and get a mech with good lateral arm movement, then slowly go from a cardinal direction or bearing number to 90 degrees in another direction and record the length with a tape measure or something. The length x4 should equal your inches per 360 degree rotation for your other FPS games.
for reference using 400 dpi, 2.5 in CSGO is around .34 in MWO.

Y'know - it's tempting to poke fun at 'the secret is aiming' but... man. It so is.
Next time you're pugging, hop up on a ridge - ridgeline, so those laserboats see you - and then hop back down. Pay attention to how people use those lasers they're all boating.
Seriously. It's just sad. It's like they're at a rave and can't stop waving their guns in the air like the just don't care.
The secret to killing ANYTHING is to hit a particular spot, and keep your guns /on/ that spot while they burn. Spread your damage, kill slower. Sure, you might get big damage numbers... but, really? You're not going to put down the enemy, which means you're not going to win.
For some reason, most players never really stop and /shoot/ at something. They flare guns off from the hip like they're an old west gunslinger, barely scratching your paint. Good aim, focused fire, and tight groupings - that's what punches holes in armor, rips off parts, and makes your shots count.
