Ravens do well with builds based around 2 large lasers. I used to do very well with a 4x with 2x ER LL 2x MG, but that was in pre-quirk days. Champion/trial raven is built like this.
Jenners are okay, Firestarters probably better (I don't play them). JR7 K with 4x mpl is pretty good.
Urbanmechs are best mechs.
Can't personally say much else to other chassis right now, add I either don't own them or haven't used in a long time.

Firestarter is a good firepower mech, good agility and good hitboxes. FS9-S w/ 5 or 6 medium pulse (I use 6 w/ xl280). FS9-K w/ 8 small pulse or some mediums. FS9-H w/ medium lasers and MG's.
Spider is decent. 5D is the only one that I kept. ECM, 1 large (or ER Large) and 2 medium lasers. the 5K w/ ER Large and MG's isn't terrible.
Generally stick the largest XL engine you can in a mech. Try to make smart engine purchases. The xl280 is a workhorse for me.

I would say Locust or Firestarter.

That being said, Locusts are the cheapest way to get get that white-knuckle thrill ride no other mech can offer. The small pulse laden 1E is the darling of most, but I personally enjoy the two V variants and the M variants. If you get into Locusts you MUST invest in an XL190 or XL180 (I actually get more use out of the XL180 - that half-ton can make all the difference).
Sniper 1V Locust
Brawly 3V Locust
Royal 3M Locust
Rabbit 1M Locust

But really, Nean, you must give us something to work with, playstyle? Weapon preference?
I mean, for all I know, you'd rather something like FS9-H, The Unexpected.

-At the start it might NOT be the best decision to make your mech as fast as possible for the start. In the beginning I got my speed rush with an 190XL-Engine-Locust, but couldn't hit anything at that speed and I couldn't steer it good enough to avoid getting hit that often. A smaller engine (170xl) and more armor were better overall.
-An ECM-Capable-Mech might help you survive for quite some time (The enemy sees you later and has a harder time tageting you). Also you can help your team either by shielding them with ECM or by Counter-ECM-ing. The latter also nets you easy XP. Skills make the handling MUCH easier and your play overall better.
-If you go scouting be informed, inform the other about what you find (hit R so the other get a glimpse of what you see)
-Don't stop. Even a slow movement might make all the difference between getting sniped by a ppc or getting only scratcher by it.
-Even in a brawl, don't stop. Unless you've got a really good spot/reason (The enemy's cornerd you and your lance, but concentrates on your assaults) don't stop. If someone has to choose between a smal moving target that would take 10-20 seconds to kill him or a stationary assault mech that can take him out in less time, you will not be recognized as a target at all.
-The most important thing is: CHOOSE YOUR FIGHTS WISELY. A one-on-one might be tempting and rewarding (and yes, you can go toe-to-toe on an Atlas, even with a Locust), but make sure there's really no one else around. And even then it will be hard, so better lock that other guy with "R" and once the LRMs start hitting him (or your buddíes come to your help), you can hit him hard as well. The other alternative would be: Shoot him once, to kite him to your buddies, but normally don't fight alone. Usually, if I die without a kill, it's because I gave in into that temptation, to early. If I can keep myself together, I usually end with 1-3 kills in a Locust.
Oh, and the slower your light mech is (say Adder, Myst Lynx or just a heavy armed one with a smaller engine), the less far you should scout away with them. An 170kph mech might get back to the other lances quite fast, even from half a map away, but if your Mech only runs with 120 kph it might be easier for them to come to your help, from less than half a map away.
About, what to buy. I think a Pirates Bane works pretty well out of the box. Quite Fast, ECM, barely ever overheats and can deliver a humble punch.

LCT-3M "LOLcust" - my "LOLcust" - 5 DHS, 5 Small Lasers, 2 AMS. same kind of crazy.
each roundabout 7 million. head armour works as designed. anyone hitting cockpit on a running locust totally deserves that oneshot kill.
for a third one i suggest LRMs and flamers. for the annoyance. maybe run it on a 100 Engine. I dont care

or try that plague bane: Plague Bane - if your feeling suicidal enough to butcher a perfectly happy PB.

That first one is missing a heat sink for legal use. The second one is missing two.
