I was concerned with the key mapping function. In regards to setting up your keys and really the only test (presumably) is being dropped right into combat to flounder about if you messed something up. I am curious if it would be beyond the realm of possibility to have say an ingame or offline setup area where you can configure your keys and test them without ill consequence to your poor team mates. Some of us have many different controllers and hundreds of buttons, I just would like to not have my *** to the fire while trying to figure out if all is well.

I can't imagine they would not implement something to this effect... 1v1 against a training dummy or something

I see this as a viable option.
It would only hurt the team if you had your controls set up poorly for your playstyle.
And to try and change then on the fly would only make matter worse.

Hopefully this is in. Seems like I change my keys every other game!

This was actually a question covered in the dev chat today:
______________________________________________________________
Question 1

<IGP_Mike> ================== First Q: <Chris K> Will there been any sort of firing range/testing grounds that we can use to test out our mech’s load outs for purposes of heat management etc before we take them into battle?

<[PGI]Omid> Yes, we have plans for this feature (though it currently does not exist in our current Beta implementation). It's our intention that you should be able to check out your 'Mech before going into a match.
<[PGI]Omid> I should add though that these decisions usually come down from design (Bryan Ekman, etc) and we act on them according to their priorities

sounds like the perfect way to test your mech and set your keybinds before heading out to battle. I had the same concerns, now i just have to hope that they have great joystick support. I know they're supposed to have it, i just wonder how well it's going to turn out.

OMG yes we need an area with dummy targets and some obstacle course to test load outs and control settings.

For keybinds, it should be possible to use modified keys - ie Shfit-1, Ctrl-Up, etc.

How in the hell was this not a priority from the very first moment? Being new to this game, and having been 15+ years since I last played a MW game on my PC; how can I be expected to take this game seriously, ESPECIALLY AS A F2P TITLE, if I have to faff around mapping, learning, and remapping my keys for something that is optimal to me in a live environment getting my *** shot all to hell?

Yes, I'm mad. Yes, I ragequit. inb4 L2play n00b.

You're Beta-testing. I seems as though you've forgotten.

I haven't forgotten, this is my first critique and probably the most important one anyone could possibly hope to make. First impressions count for everything and right now, even in beta, this one issue is a game breaker.

Perhaps this should be placed over in general discussion instead of suggestions. This isn't the place for critiques and empty threats to stop playing the game before it even launches. Try coming up with a viable solution and articulating it in text in a meaningful way. Read the Posting Etiquette Forum and try again.

I don't think I'll play until it's in. I got on and tried to map keys for a match and had some real trouble. I don't want to sour the game by fumbling around for 20 matches just to get a serviceable keymap.

Yeah, I feel really bad stumbling about in other people's games while trying to set up my traditional joystick and mouse combo, especially seeing that I have to mess with configs, it seems, and that makes me leave and join repeatedly to get it working properly. Offline walking about mode would be much better. Other people wouldn't have to endure my "WTF, I still can't move, *disconnects*" antics.

Had similar experience with Planetside 2. Nice of it trying to give me an in media res start by dropping me directly into action, but it was kind of ruined by me trying to set up controls while people were shooting at me.

I'm joining those questioning much more dedication to the game till this is implemented.
I even dropped a medium amount of purchased credits to speed this along , thinking I'd drop right in (played mechwarrior waaaay back).......and I was wrong-

Very big +1 for mechwarrior OFFLINE

And, taking from another game similar in structure. Starter/tier one/noobs whatever, only see other green players till certain number of battles.
Nothing like dropping into a fray while trying to learn the controls, learn precisely what your playstyle is, and try and hit something.
Same with the other game I try and squeeze time into, slaughtering noobs, clubbing seals, whatever its called these days is rather boring. same with the flip side-getting dry humped during the learning curve (see MWOffline)
Want more of my money? add these features reasonably soon.
Business, kids in school, certainly can't be the only one who'd appreciate this. (over 50, rather spend green than hours achieving nominal ranking. 20-30 bucks a month on a fun game is pretty cheap)

regards
