Outnumber the enemy...with heavier 'Mechs!
I'm going with a Warhammer WHM-6K. Wait, we can't get those, can we? Curse you Harmony Gold!!!!
Okay I'll go with a Thunderbolt TDR-7M. Sure, it's a Marik refit, bite me.
Also, nothing wrong with the Atlas provided the pilot knows what he/she is doing and doesn't stray out into open ground. Also, turn off that radar. Why do you need radar for an AC/20 anyway?

Yes, I do know it. And in my intro post for House Steiner I said that I fight for the Lyran people, not necessarily for House Steiner. If that means I use a Kuritan 'Mech for that purpose, so be it. The only tech I won't use is Clan.

Thanks to the ablative armor of a battlemech you can beat every mech with every mech it may last centuries but you are able to do this.

Quite possible. But like always, it all depends on the pilot's skill and dumb luck.
And the Wolfhound, to quote John Spartan is, 'very not bad.'

Second: A mech can be either scrap salvaged and given, or it can be an honored family heirloom. If your mommy or daddy drove an Atlas, and you're the eldest child with mechwarrior training, guess what green horn, you get to start in an Atlas.
Third: There will be some deviation from established cannon, namely, we're all likely going to be starting off relatively equally. However, each weight class has a well defined role to begin with. A good lance is generally a mix of weight classes and not all Assaults. Yes, even Lyrans know this.
I expect we might pick a 'role' and then it'll start us off at the low end of the weight class. For example: The Assault role, can easily be medium, heavy, or assault class of mech (A good 55 ton medium like a Wolverine can put out some serious pain, let alone clan mediums...) so I'd guess it'd start you with medium. Scout is however light/medium only pretty much, and on the lighter end of medium. Command is pretty much strictly heavy, think, Rifleman for example, at least to start. Defense however, that's where I can see the possibility of starting with an assault mech, but more likely a heavy. Crusaders are incredible platforms, durable, with good range... till they run out of missiles anyways (Though I do enjoy the crusader variant with 2 large lasers). Even stock Thunderbolts can bring the pain.
My 2 cents.

Most people forget that the first brand new designs the IS had saw
Steiner/Davion 1 light, 1 medium
Liao 1 light, 1 heavy
Kurita 2 assault
