First off, this is not a rant, brag or b!tch thread. This is merely showing what I believe to be an underlying issue with the game. I've been killed by variable lag lights in the past and it has always gotten to me. I consider myself an above average shooter and for the life of me there would always be some Light that would just be un-hittable for me. I discovered why one match, variable ping. After dying early one match to a Light that I couldn't hit with lasers consistently. I decided to check his ping the entire match. What I discovered was his ping jumped from 55ms up to as much as 400ms quite frequently. This made leading and getting a "bead" on him very very difficult.
Fast forward to ECM, and the Raven. I decided to put my theory to the test, without really having to worry about Streakitties or LRMs. I grabbed a Raven 3l, strapped an XL255, streak and 3xML and of course an ECM. I fired up Netflix, jumped in a PUG with the aforementioned mech and proceeded to test. Well needless to say it was ridiculous, I felt nearly invincible. I was called quite a few bad names, and admittedly I deserved it. I can be a **** sometimes.
Somehow in the match my team 7 mech kills, the enemy team had 5 and we still lost. The enemy team had one Catapult than ran off to hide, So I was forced to guard base until time ran out for fear of it being capped (it was so close to being capped!)
Also a disclaimer, I know not the most dmg done, not saying I am great, not saying they sucked, I am not calling for nerfs. What I am saying is, with a little lag, ECM, 1999 netcode and a fast mech, the game...well it just needs to be addressed.

not ecm is a problem here but abusing lag and bad netcode.

Mm they presumably know their netcode is broken with packetloss / jitter.

You should delete this post as all you're doing is giving people ideas.

He got 7 kills running around like a tard under lagshield without missiles being able to hit him, while watching a movie instead of the game.

Where was I complaining? Just stated what happened as some might wonder why a team with 7kills vs 5 lost when time ran out. I could care less about the loss, I was demonstrating latency/netcode issues.

ECM I am fine with, its just a small piece of the pie. I love the no more no skill boatfest

The more people that do it, the higher possibility that it will be addressed. This was done for demonstration purposes so that they may be taken care of.

I don't think he was watching the movie per se, just having netflix stream it to ruin his ping. Can do the same by having any consistent download going.

Streaks were the only viable counter to lagging mechs IMO. Now that they use ECM they take forever to kill, and I've seen more than a few just run in circles spraying lasers everywhere and getting tons of damage dealt.

Yeah, I think most of the responses are missing the point. He's not saying this is the way you should play. The OP clearly hates this way of playing. He's saying he did some experimenting, found an exploit, and is pointing out the exploit so it can be fixed.

In my opinion, the netcode part of your Raven+ECM+Netflix equation is 100% of the problem. The Raven+ECM, in my opinion, doesn't need to be fixed. I like the ECM as-is and I think we should see how it shakes out as more electronic warfare features are added and we get a better idea of their grand picture for balance.

So anyway, I think the exploit you pointed out here is solely powered by the netcode issues, which the devs already know about and are working hard to fix. So really what you are showing here is how a new feature (ECM) makes an old bug (netcode) worse. In my opinion, I hope this thread is not used as evidence that the ECM needs to be nerfed.

First few posters need to read better. What OP is saying is that you can download so much things that it lags your internet.

That lag will slow down your connection to MWO's servers, causing you to mess up the netcode further making you so much more harder to hit.

Good Post OP... thank you!

Sadly there will always be some trolls who just dont get it. Hopefully some start thinking about the problems with MWO. I am not saying the game is bad, actually I love the game while at the same time hating the flaws. PGI need to improve on those flaws before bad things are happening. I want this game to become what it can beome and have fun with it for years to come. I am afraid this will be hard to achieve if PGI is not focusing on the important stuff and try to seperate constructive posts from troll posts in the forum.

Regards
Gori

lol, nice bit of experimentation there. The fact that the game is this messed up is why I haven't played since the last patch. I'm watching to see if the devs get their act together before they have to close the doors.

Exactly that, thanks for posting your findings OP. As much as it would suck if more people did it (looking at you d bag steve), it might actually bump up the priority of fixing the damn net code if they do, I mean if you just emailed it to support, you'd probably just get a brush off... Still might be worth emailing the link to this thread their way, just to make sure they don't miss it.

Jeezus peoples. This is a BUG report as much as anything else. If all you need is Netflix to win, the net code is broken. OP proved it. Thanks

PGI has an open position for lead network engineer... not sure they know how to fix the net code until they get this position filled.

This definitely does point out a significant flaw in PGI's netcode. We'd always known it existed, but this just goes to show how easy it is to manipulate. I'm hoping they've already addressed this in their netcode rewrite. If not, hopefully this demonstration will help them get it right.

Bittorrent I find is also a reliable way to activate a lag shield, and you have a shiny new file when your games are done! I didn't do this intentionally, just discovered it by accident one day when I noticed my lag was really bad and realized I had forgotten to turn off my bittorrent.

One of my corpsmates actually made a video of him spectating my ridiculous lag that day (during the end of the match.)

If you see me running into walls, that was not intentional, it was open space moments before my lag warped me. Similarly I nail a dead-on shot on that jenner on my screen, but on his I'm shooting the snow next to the jenner. It explodes anyway.
