I don't think any windows 8 users are going to willfully embrace an unstable update from Microsoft. You really ought to just go ahead and put it on a partition and give it a go.

It does fine.

Still a better idea to find a copy of Win7.

I Will be getting a copy of Win 7, I just can't afford it right now and I don't want to pirate it so I was planning on doing Windows 8.1 Free Preview for the time being.

You do get 30 days trial on windows 7 so if you're going to manage to purchase it before that time is up you might as well do windows 7. The windows 8 preview ought to last until it's officially released in October so that'll give you a couple months to get your loonies saved away if you need them.

Indeed, win 7 64 bit is so solid and can be personalized, tweaked,or made to just plain be a simple effective medium for frames per second action........oh yeah. while windows 8 will dazzle you with sparkly icons and probably fool you into bloating itself with unnecessary "New" and "awesome" thingy's.... instead of the basic performance dominating programs such as FRAPS, MSI afterburner, and core temp monitoring program and gadget......for real time individual core temp loads freq. temps all on a neat little gadget. Nothing blazes like a fresh install of win 7 64bit(before clutter).......nimble like a ninja.

I ran a previously installed copy on a second HD on my new install of 8.1 and it worked.
I've since moved off 8.1 and back to 8 though.

Sorry for the late reply but I have a lot of stress this August :D

I play MWO with Windos 8 on a Pentium D since December.
Even on this old CPU the performance was good enough for 10-20 fps in battles and convinced me to buy a license of W8 for 30 Euro before the PreRelease expired in January !

On 1st August I got a MacBookPro9,1 and installed the PreRelease of Windos 8.1 with Bootcamp for playing MWO.
I dont have any problems with 8.1 and get up to 60 fps in the native resolution of my display :D

MfG, MEX

PS: Depending on how big your HDD is, I suggest to install Ubuntu after installing the PreRelease of Windows too !
You can shrink your Windos 8.1 partion to 31 or 63 or 127 or ... GiB as even the 64bit version of Windows 8 can run MWO with a minimum partition size of 30 GiB :)

I've since moved back from the buggy annoying Win 8 to Win 7... can't deal with that tile screen instead of a start menu.

XP? That's like a decade old, yuk.

Windows 8 isn't that buggy, and it runs fine. The menu is different, but you'll figure it out easy enough and it isn't that bad.
I was disappointed with 8.1, because they seem to have gone backwards in development instead of improving on their original ideas. Microsoft seems to be making a lot of big mistakes this year (Windows 8, Windows Server, Windows phone, Xbox One).

Windows server 2012, on the other hand....

The only thing you could have done better with that MBP would be to load Win 7 on it. :-)

For those using Win8, download and use Classic Shell. It will do what 8.1 will be doing here in a few months.

now running windows 8.1 RTM (fully activates with the windows 8 key you already have) and it runs great after a graphics driver update start button is there but there is no start menu for those that are curious, takes you to the same start page that 8 has, I do like some of the graphics refinements and overall it feels pretty stable, runs games, audio software, and anything I throw at it really well.

Yup runs just fine on 8.1 (installing RTM this weekend from technet)

all of you who are hung up on having the old start menu please install classic shell

It is a free open source source forge project.
