I'm pretty sure they're putting on this little tournament to force people to solo-play purely to get a shittonne of solo-matches into everybody's ELOs. So try to think of it as just that, as just a way to get people to play solo to help get the MM/ELO thing a bit more balanced.... Plus a few people will win some pointless prizes.

I was in the same boat as you, too busy this weekend to seriously compete in the tourney. That was until about an hour ago when my schedule cleared up a bit. Here's the thing though, I think the tournament has closed it's doors to new players. I don't recall opt'n in for this thing, but now when I go to do so all I see are the leader boards...
Kind of lame.
