What Mech Would You Bring To Tournament From Each Weight Category?

For me it would be the following:
Light category: Spider 5D (I don't own jenners or ravens)
Medium category: Cicada 2A (Treb 5J as alternate)
Heavy: Flame (Cataphract 3D as alternate)
Assault: Awesome 9M (I don't own stalkers or atlases)
Which of your mechs from your team above would be captain?
Mine would be the cicada 2A.

Medium: Cicada-3M
Heavy: Ilya Muromets
Assault: Atlas D-DC
Not sure what you mean by captain, lance commander? Leader of the 8 (or better yet, 12) man team?
Atlas D-DC would be captain regardless.
If forced to use mechs I actually own, I'd have to switch to HBK-4SP for medium, and wouldn't even be able to enter with heavy or assault.

For mediums I'd use, out of the mechs I own, HunchP or Trem 7M
For heavies Cataphract 2X or 4X (ppc sniper or gauss sniper)
For assaults, out of what I own, I'd probably go for a mixed loadout 3F I've been playing with. I don't own any Atlases aside from Founders.

COM-2D
CN9-AL
DRG-FLAME (CAPTAIN)
ASD-7 trial (because i don't own any assaults)

medium: cicada 3m, hbk 4sp, cent a, or cent d, depending on team composition
heavy: phract 3d or cat a1, depending on if brawling or sniping
assault: atlas ddc or rs, depending on if brawling or sniping
edit: and if no mandatory class mix, for a team of 8,
2x raven 3l
3x phract 3d
3x atlas rs
or
2x raven 3l
3x cat a1
3x atlas ddc
give or take one, depending on who's better with what mech

Yours is definitely the safe bet in Vegas. Thankfully there is a tournament scoreboard this weekend and we shall see. Statistically speaking, you should be right. There will be plenty of players with vendettas and chips on their shoulders to stay awake all weekend making sure this doesn't happen so that they can cite it later in forum arguments.

With that said, anyone not taking a Raven 3L for the lights must be brave or crazy... or both.
With the others, there are some favorites, but medium would be of the most interest (there's no clear winner IMO)... you can't really automatically say the the Atlas DC is a sure winner...
With heavies, it's hard to not go with a cata (splatcat or the K2) with some splatter of phracts (3D or 4X or ilya), but not to be forgotten and sneaky dragon...

A team of 2 3Ls, 3 A1's, and 3 DDC's would be a nightmare for sure and just about indestructable. I would just tweak that combo with one more 3L and one less DDC and you have the perfect team of killers. Now call them Steiner and base them out of Germany and enter the tournament.
The job of the DDC's is to give ecm cover to A1's and stay alive the whole round. The job of A1's is to protect DDC's and kill anything that comes within their ecm bubble killzone. The job of ravens is to do what ever the hell they want anywhere anytime.

Light
Raven 3L - ECM, 3x medium lasers and 2x streak SRM2s and occasionally the;
Raven 4X - 1x LBX10 and 2x Medium Pulse and;
Raven 2X - 2x PPCs, (now upgraded to ER PPCs post tournament and I'm still not decided on which I prefer, no minimum range 'vs' I can fire forever >.<)
Medium
Centurion 9-AL - 2x PPCs and 2x SRM6
Heavy
Catapult C1(F) - 2x PPCs and 2x SRM6s (also upgraded to ER PPCs post tournament)
Assault
Atlas 7-D(F) - 4x medium lasers, 2x LBX10s and 2x SRM6s (my g/f witnessed this mech get dropped into alpine over and over, seriously guys I even tried waiting until I had just been on alpine to drop this only to have it drop me right into another alpine match which is why I started running the Awesome instead... there was so much swearing... especially the multiple times I ended up on alpine twice in a row... with a brawling assault class... I was coming up with whole new combinations of profanities >.<)
Awesome 8Q - 4x PPCs
Yes, I know there are more hardcore builds out there and I have some myself but these are the mechs I chose to use and stuck with. I didn't want to cheese my way through the tournament. To make it clear I by no means think these builds are the best, they are just what I was in the mood for over the weekend. I used the founders cat and atlas because I didn't want to miss out on the bonus money we could earn this weekend, without making myself a bit of extra cash what else was I going to get out of this?

Medium, Any Trebuchet, I mastered three variants last weekend
Heavy, Muppets, Fang, Flame, -1C -1N maybe a dash of -2X (I frigging love my -2X brawlaphract)
Assualts, Pretty Baby, D-DC, maybe a Stalker LRM boat.
Depends on the rules. The common thing with our 8 man teams when they start talking comp is "Ok I have to grab a beer, you guys tell me what I need to be in when I get back"
Oddly, our lance leaders are fine with that.

Raven 3L: 400-500 a match
Centurion 9A: 500-700 a match
Catapult A1 OR Cataphract 3D: 500-700 a match
Stalker F OR Atlas DDC: 500-700 a match
All damage numbers are in PUG drops, so they'll be significantly lower in a tourney. If all the players get 300 damage though, the enemy team is dead.
You wouldn't pick Commandos, Cicadas, Dragons or Awesomes because they're the hardest to get solid damage with, and the first to die due to less armor than their contemporaries.

Assault: AS7-D-DC
Medium: CN9-A
Light: COM-2D
I don´t own a heavy one, but my choice would probably be one of the Catapults
