Gotta say, this is one creative and smart way to get the most Elo data in the shortest timeframe possible. Well done PGI. I like!

Same. Promotional crap like this is always a good way to boost players and gather more information. I know I'll be squeezing in more matches than I typically have time for over the weekend.

Blowout sales and stuff are a really good way for them to boost revenue, too. How many people would like to see 75% off all cockpit items or half off mechbay slots...or like 80% off paint?

Problem is its going to be far to easy to game the system if they have another, ill bet there are people right now making alt accounts and crashing the Elo score on them while they farm the mechs and pilot trees they want so that next time they can fight from the very bottom of the heap inflating their KDR and W/L record.

There needs to be a much better system to award the banners for future events.

I am pretty sure they came up with it yesterday or two days ago just to make more people put an effort to adjust their Elo, help them gather statistics and as a side effect make some $$ from Premium time, which is more than worth it if you are spending long hours shooting stuff.
