In response to the original question, I feel as thought it's the cohesiveness of the various units within and the unbreakable bonds (obviously not grammatical bonds, LOL) that they form. All despite the fascist leadership of delusional/insane human leaders.

I heart you House Loia.

They're not *all* crazy. Just... most of them.

Let's see...you had "Mad Max" Liao, who thought he was a god and insisted on being called "Celestial Wisdom". You had his wife, Elizabeth, who was banging his most important General under his nose. You had his son, who was something of a mystic poof. There's his daughter, Candace, who decided she'd be better off allied with Davion. You have his other daughter, Romano, who's ******* crazy and his heir; she found out about her mother and the General, and killed her mother and sent an assassin after General Ridzik, and singlehandedly provoked the 4th Sucession War by attempting to assassinate Quintus Allard. You have her son by her spymaster, who acts like he's crazy just to protect himself from his mother, and her daughter, who thinks she's the reincarnation of a Hindi death goddess.

Yeah, good luck with that.

Can't stand Liao, being a dedicated Davion loyalist, but the one thing I DO find fascinating about them are the Warrior Houses: Imarra, Hiritsu, Kamata, Lu Sann, Dai Da Chi, Fujita, Ma-Tsu Kai, Tsang Xiao, and my personal favourite, Ijori. The Houses bring some honor and philosophical discipline to what is, let's face it guys, an otherwise blank slate of a culture possessing mainly negative traits. I really hope to see someone on the Liao side create units based on the Warrior Houses.

Oh no, you're taking this seriously. It's just the goons, they only do stuff to aggravate you. Don't argue or reason with them because they'll counter with a drawing of a bald eagle puking up a flagpole in front of a mcdonalds or something. Are you new to the internet?

Hardly. Sometimes, it's FUN to bait the trolls.

There is a reason Comstar placed the FedSuns under Interdiction, and to this day Hanse Davion is known as "The Greatest Enemy of Peace"! If you don't believe me you can even ask the neutral Comstar representatives about Davion aggression, or you can ask the Free World's League or Kuritans. Either the FedComs are the target of the grandest conspiracy in history involving all the citizens of the Free Worlds League, and Draconis Combine AND Capellan Confederation AND(!!!) Comstar, or, as is obvious, they are treacherous warmongers relying on sneaky tactics and open displays of violence!

You try to stand with your treachery ally draconis warrior, but that does not make your lies into truth.
Of course there is a reason, that Comstar put the Federated Suns under Interdiction. Comstar never wanted peace and justice in the Inner Sphere. They want power and control and that is easily acquired when nations oppress their people, so that Comstar may appear as the shining knight in armor to rescue them.
The Federated Suns with its people living in freedom and justice and fighting for the oppressed people in the Cappellan Confederation and Draconis Combine are not only a hindrance for Comstar's dreams of power but are the single hurdle Comstar can never take. That frustration lead to the Interdiction. But even then justice could not be stopped.

What makes Liao special?
House Liao is special because of their history of madness, power-hungry dictators, mass-murderers, terror-inducing rulers who do not hesitate to use the worst things possible to subjugate the people on their worlds.
House Liao is the single most dangerous disease for humanity in the Inner Sphere. Without that House, Peace could have been already found in the Inner Sphere centuries ago.
They are warmongers without equals, rulers without conscience and a family thriving in inner family intercourse..

But do not fear. The Prince is coming. And he will put things in order. He will make it right for all people in the Inner Sphere and heal the Cappellans from House Liao.
I will happily act as one of the antibodies to fight that disease with my mech.

House Liao was the reason the word "scum" had to be invented. And they prove as the living definition of that word.

Liao leaders have the same diversity as that of the other Houses. However most people understand MechWarrior/BattleTech through the 4th SSW and the Clan Invasions: in other words, when Max and his family were in charge. But perception is reality.

Capellans are unique in that they are all terrible human beings, and they are on some level aware of this, and they revel in it. I cite the RVN-3L as my proof.

(are Tetatae human beings or just extra-sized eight piece buckets?)

Well I don't know. My reason is simple. I'm blindly following the decision put forward by MW:AoD (TTG) where Bannson had made some kind of deal with Liao. I know there's a difference between storylines, but I like to keep things simple, as it gives more space for crazy ;-)

I think it's the fascism. Well, okay, it doesn't make you truly special, the Kuritans are pretty good at it too, but hey, at least you're good at something!

For me it's their underdog status and the ruthlessness and cunning they use to survive.

Well that's an easy question to answer. The Chinese and those of Chinese descent are simply genetically superior. :D

What makes Liao special? Ummm they ride the short bus? I'm not sure but there is certainly a lot of squawking about them.

Now I duck and run for cover . . .
