This weekend I found myself missing out on how great MWO looks, and I realized it's because I'm using heat vision more and more - and playing in Heat Vision doesn't look all that good.

There are numerous times I'll turn it on, for any of the following:

1. River City Night map.
2. The Snow map where visibility gets limited.
3. When hunting for the enemy due to ECM limiting targeting - so, nearly all the time I'm not in combat.

The game looks really good, but there's too many visual effects that make heat vision necessary and I don't get to play a great-looking game most of the time as a result. ECM is probably the worst offender in that I feel like I have to use it all the time to spot hidden targets.

IR vision should be limited to 300m, contain no texture data, and all non-mech, non-skybox assets should be the same blue color. Remove all shading. Boom you've got a good IR vision.

If you actually want a good IR vision, look at how Terminator Salvation imagines IR vision. Very well done - even if the movie itself was only meh.
