So apparently this is the only joystick you can buy on Amazon for less than 50 bucks. That aside, I plugged in my logitech with the default configurations and it's almost unusable. The throttle is backwards, the torsotwist is messed up, it just sucks overall. I can't figure out what buttons do what and I have no idea how to change anything.

Can someone walk me through making this usable? I used to play mechwarrior 2 on a joystick back in the day but I don't have a 13pin serial port on my computer for my old joystick.

so, you could do THIS or THIS for your old joystick

you could get one to USB, but I wouldn't recommend it, it would require 2 separate drivers, not one.

Logitech support try this site for getting your current joystick up and running. I recommend installing their software, it lets you fully customize your joystick to do almost anything.

hope this helps!

Sorry, don't have a free PCI port. I installed the software, I don't know what to do now. I haven't used a joystick since mechwarrior 2.

Ok, I have done some more research and have come up with a guide that doesn't use the logitech software.

I would also recommend posting your question to the logitech support forum for more direct help.

First off, don't be quick to assume that you have a joystick problem. MWO's current joystick support is, shall we say... lacking.

First thing to do is check your joystick functioning in the Control Panel. If all of the axis and buttons show a suitable response, then you can move on to making MWO work with it.

You designate joystick button and axis assignments in MWO's Options menu, in the third column. For axis assignments, use the entries in the bottom rows of that column. Double click your mouse on an entry field, then choose the button or axis you want handling that entry.

There are commands that can be edited into the USER.CFG file with Notepad. Depending on what you need to accomplish, these may be useful:

cl_joystick_invert_throttle = 1 //makes the throttle work in the right direction.
cl_joystick_throttle_range = 0 //makes the throttle work in (Forward/Neutral/Reverse) mode.

cl_joystick_invert_pitch = 1 // Invert pitch axis
cl_joystick_invert_turn = 1 // Invert turn axis

Some additional lines that may come in handy... tweak the numbers to suit your needs:

cl_joystick_gain = 8 // The higher this value is set to, the faster a full throw of the joystick is going to move the reticule

cl_joystick_sensitivity = 0.75 // The smaller this value is set to, the more sensitive your joystick will become

cl_joystick_deadzone = 0.1

If you need more information, there are several threads in the forums.

I did none of that.

I plugged the same joystick in. used the stick's software to configure it to work the way I wanted it. I pair it with a Nostromo n52 and use the d-pad on the n52 to manage my throttle.

install the Logitech software - launch the logitech profiler - left click the "twist" option and select properties - I put my torso twist at 92% sensitivity, 0% deadzone, 100% range. unclick invert axis polarity and make sure you have twist mapped to "Twist" (there is a drop-down menu for options)

left click the throttle and select properties - 50% sensitivity, 0% deadzone, 100% range and select (check) "invert axis polarity". Throttle mapped to "throttle". I leave the js throttle lever alone (as in I never touch it) You may have to find its center though, it has been a while since I set it up.

Use the same settings for x- and y-axis as you did for throttle, but uncheck invert axis polarity for both.

In-game, set your buttons the way you want using the games oprions menu. I put Q and B on my hat switch (up and down respectively - once turns it on, a second turns it off). Thumb button is 2 for me, but you can map it for your comms button.
