Cute, but not really true. While I am glad when I see some of those on my team, the fact is players still run a diverse array of mechs and (for example) I see just as many Centurions, Stalkers, Jenners, Dragons, and Trebuchets as I do anything else.
Well they are hurting their team with the current MM system since class matching no longer exists.

In closed there were.
1. scout/strafe/cap
2. Brawler
3. Direct fire
4. Lrm Support
Now it seems to be
1. Scout/Strafe/Cap/Brawler(because 3Ls can do what they want)
2. Brawler
3. Sniper/Brawler (because direct fire is still too close.)
4. LRM spam/Brawler
It used to be about working together to achieve a goal. It didn't matter who did what as long as when the end came your team was the one that was on top. Now it only matters who gets the kills. I got the kills I get to look down on everybody else. Instead of worrying about how to win at all costs it is," I get kills and I get to use the f bomb on the guy who wins the game from the base cap". I get the kills but I am loosing the conquest game because I ignored the points, so I will blame it on my team. I get the kills, but I get to yell at the spider that held on long enough for the conquest points to win. I get the kills except when I don't, so instead of playing the metagame I stay with my current build and complain every hour on the forums until I get what I want at the cost of everybody else.

Those commander roles still seem to be hinted at when they talk about the consumable modules that are coming out in the future. Though the scout one I'm missing terribly is the 4x target info.

These roles are currently user-defined. A role is nothing more than a plan on how to use your particular asset in the fight.
The roles my team uses are:
Brawler
Skirmisher
Scout
LRM-support
Direct-Fire support
these roles are well defined and fillable with many different mechs in the game.
our game allows a LOT of freedom of choice in how you play the game, we as individuals limit ourselves to just a few builds.
there is nothing to stop you from scouting Steiner-style in an Atlas, and while you will be playing the role of scout it seems to me you might be able to do it better in a different mech. ANY different mech. but if you can make it work, good on you. this isn't Dungeons and Dragons where we have tightly defined character classes and are only able to develop skills within that role or class. we have to develop our own definition of what our role is.
and that is a GOOD thing.
TL;DR: lack of roles in this game is not a failure of the game (it provides us with plenty of tools), it is a failure of ourselves to define and apply a role for ourselves.

As Savage wrote, our group settled on exactly the same names, except where he said Warrior we used Striker (presumably if that one, or any of them even, function similarly). Currently we, the players, develop our own meta; as was mentioned in this thread (although I see it's locked now, but still worth a read of the OP).
I would say that what you listed aren't really options. though (and at the least, 'lesser options' to be sure). I mean you can take them, or anything you want for that matter, but you're not going to win against the best (or even good) teams playing the optimal builds/roles/strats.
In a competitive setting really only the handful of Mechs I mentioned get used (and then there's a little bit of leeway with the league agreed restrictions - again though, simply because they perform 'next best' in said role).
So while I agree with you to an extent, competitive play will always follow the path of least resistance, i.e. the most efficient builds/roles/strats. And I'm just not sure there are as many viable roles/builds/strats as you (and others) claim there to be,

Lights - scout/recon, harrassment
Mediums - support/harrassment
Heavy - fire support, artillery, harrassment, sniper, brawler
Assault - Brawler, sniper, assault
At least those are the roles I see most of them played in game. I do see an occasional sniper, or brawler medium.

In PUGs there are several roles to fulfill:
- ECM-Sield: ECM Mech that stays with the Main body of the unit and encloses them in its ECM bubble
- Harrasser: Goes behind enemy lines and harrasses Mechs there (Fast Mech, ideally ECM)
- Long Range Mech: LRM or Sniper Mech that tries to keep a distance from the main battlefield
- Brawler: Well, Short Range combat of course
- Basecapper: Fast Mech (ideally ECM) that tries to sneak behind the lines to cap the enemy base (either to win or to draw enemy attention away from the main battlefield
- Suicider Type I: Slow Mech that goes away from the Main Group on his own in order to get surrounded by enemy mechs and killed fast (without doing much damage to the enemy) ... usually Heavy/Assault Mech, ideally without ECM
- Suicider Type II: Mech that crests a ridge/hill and catches Bullets/Lasers, while the rest of the team doesn´t follow but instead waits behind the hill, to stay save from danger
- Finisher: Stays out of combat for most of the part (in order to stay unharmed) and observes the combats between friendlies and enemies. As soon as an Enemy shows Red Torso Internal Structure (with other words, is close to death) he begins to attack him in order to get the kill (role can be taken by every weight class)
