Under current implementation, anyone not using thermals all the time is just shooting oneself to the leg. With one press of a button you enhance your situational awarness 100% with no practical downside. That's an epitome of screwd up design.

For long range mech detection, then yeah it's got no downsides. It's terrible for brawling however, since it makes it harder to discern mech components (at my resolution at least) and, more important, makes it borderline impossible to work out which mech is in front out of an overlapping pair. I imagine those who stay in thermal 100% of the time end up causing more friendly fire damage than those who don't.

That said, Thermal is too much better than Night Vision, but mostly because Night Vision is crap.

When I drop I always know exactly how many enemies I am facing, if I see only one, I don't go blindly chasing it then complain when the other enemies I ignored suddenly bushwhack me. Also, when you know all the enemy went one way you don't have to SCOUT the far side 'just in case'

All this is poor playing due to lack of learning, lack of skill. Not ECM

I don't have a problem with thermal vision, mainly because I rarely use it. It certainly isn't required to see where things are on any map.

@Tarman

No one's eyes can see through trees and weather effects, I don't care if you want to call it a crutch, mechs would be invisible to regular vision yet show up easily on thermal vision. I've had the same thought before as the OP, and when I am spectating someone in normal vision I often think about how pretty all the effects and mechs are and wish I wasn't relegated to using stupid thermal vision so much just because it is so far superior to the regular vision mode.

If you're not using thermal judiciously then you're only gimping yourself, the only time I'm not in thermal is when I'm in the middle of a firefight and shut myself down because when the mech starts back up the thermal is off.

I just gotta note the amusement I had reading this one.

So, you use thermal 100% of the time..... and you note while observing through someone elses eyes about normal, not thermal vision....you realize that you have to be dead to observe......errr...if thermal is such an advantage, why are you observing that non-thermal player?
