I could see it working, if he plays with a team. Our assaults hardly ever die because they stay grouped and focus fire, effectively mowing down anything and everything in their path. As long as the other members of the team keep their flanks cleared (which is incredibly easy to do for a coordinated team), this could work. The assault pilots of my team would probably never try something like this, but to each his own,

Well if it is working for you then carry on. I still think you are getting lucky that you aren't meeting fast mechs from behind or dieing so quickly they don't have a chance to get to you.

could be you are smart enough to position yourself in such a way that the fast mechs don't have a chance to get to you, I just don't know.

if I ever see you, I'll buy you a case of coca cola if you survive the match if you are running this build and pugging.

'Mechs getting behind you may not be the only problem with this build. The other issue is that you're probably afraid of ever turning your rear armor towards the guys you're fighting, so if you get into a bad situation you never turn around to get out of it faster, and you get stuck in the bad place and killed. So far you've died in 90% of your games, which isn't great.

i was just goofing around -- committing early to the brawl to get data on at least 10 games whether people really go for an atlas' back... it's not as often as we think that people will go for CTR kill... most will just focus on your CT anyway

game 9&10 - i actually announced it in global chat that i had no back armor, still no takers...

Lol, you don't have more armor than other builds because most pilots already max their armor, at least on the torso zones. All that does is make you vulnerable for attacks from behind. You don't even have to run away to get shot in the back.

Lol, you don't know what i'm talking about...

you have a set amount of points for front or rear torso armor -- it's just about how you allocate it...

I have -more- armor on my rear than a stock Atlas, largely because I learned to play in Open Beta when cheeky little Jenners would come blitzing out of nowhere and three-shot an Atlas, giggling like a madman.

so if a warrior comes home with shield = victory or honorable battle

shields were big and were used as stretchers = honorable death

coming home without your shield = means you dropped it on the battlefield so you can run faster

The Spartans are a good example of how not to do things.

so in MWO terms, i run my Atlas with;
  • 123 CT armor points / 1 point CTR
  • 83 LT/RT armor points / 1 point LTR/RTR
so in a face-to-face vs another Atlas / Stalker / Splat & AC20 cat -- my Atlas will win the day because i have more armor than typical builds.

If i turn around, i metaphorically "drop my shield" and die like a coward.

anyway, battle-test (anecdotal) proof is as follows

Spoiler

EDIT: apart from above screenshots -- i speed dropped 10 games... only once was i cored from CTR...

Excellent when I hit your back with srms instakill.

Not putting any armor in your back is retar ded. The first raven 3L that comes along will kill you in 3-4 hits to the back.

While I've experimented with the armor values on some mechs, I'm always near full armor and either a 60/40 front back ration or as high as an 80/20 ratio depending on the mech and how its played....

...that said, I very often take test shots on various areas on certain mechs...some builds commonly skimp armor on various locations to fit that extra firepower/cooling/ammo.

AC20 boats are a particular favorite to leg, causing ammo explosions is so much fun :)

Lol I was doing this back in closed beta when I was bored. Back then I almost always died being cored from the front as long as you position yourself good and make sure you're with some buddys nearby. Though I think we have smarter players now that I'm not sure how well it will work now. Anyway, not surprised it's working for him so far.

Its a sound idea, so long as no one notices or takes advantage of it if they notice. Its almost the same idea as another atlas I once ran in to. He didn't have leg armor, cause "no one ever shoots the legs". Well, was not his lucky day, as i noticed, and killed him pretty fast without taking any damage myself. Legged atlas's don't turn very fast ;p

It's worth a try and if you have a team of people designed to protect their Assaults, which is what Mediums are for, you can maul people.

Maybe not ONE armour, but down to five. A stray slash of a laser could fell you.

It's always worth flashing the legs of heavier 'mechs to see if the pilot has moved armour around for ammunition or weapons.

I think hes saying it will easily show that atlas has no back armor. Which is true but as long as you have cover around you like teammates, they can't get to your back armor unless they charged. Then again we have a lot of ravens rolling out now so I don't know how well that will work now.

Hmm you're right. That's half of your max armour?

When collision is back in, these type of "Bunker Builds" would be very viable for a certain play style.

That's all well and good until engine criticals are put in. You'll look really silly when that 4 MG spider burns your back once with a medium laser, then kills you in seconds because you didn't have enough sense to cover your butt.

The only mech I run with tissue-paper rear armor is my hunchback, and that's because you have the speed and twist to shield your back pretty well.
