This! Although I swap the 3xML's for 2xMPL's because I like the noise, and the shorter duration seems to get more focussed results with my latency.

Enjoy!

It's generally pretty close to this:

http://mwo.smurfy-ne...a2a0ef2176da7db

You'll see this a lot in Run Hot or Die (with minor variations, some run without AMS and more heatsinks, and some will shed a little armour, but most designs will be very similar to this).

Why would you need AMS? Does it even trigger against SSRMs? (I would think that it would but it seems like I've fired SSRMs at enemies with AMS and not triggered it....)

I do think you are correct there Seph. I dont believe AMS is a working trait with ECM

That, but there is various versions but they're not much different, basically anything with ECM, ES, FF, DHS, 280xl or bigger, 2-3 ml/mpl, 2ssrm2 (usually 2T ammo). Sometimes bap or ams or extra heatsinks, tag is fairly common. If repair costs was still in the game it would be a nightmare compared to other lights.
There of course is totally different builds like ones with ppc or srm6 but the ones above are the usual Raven 3LOL.

It does. It is a preference thing, but taking out a random Streak here or there can add up to a reasonable difference in an extended light engagement.

Totally not required, though.

Is it really necessary to crank the engine size up so high?

I've tried it with/without AMS. Frankly I like the noise that makes as well and can't think of anything else useful to put in the slot (heat is just not an issue) so I'll take the AMS to provide some limited streak cover and some team LRM cover whilst I'm dueling with ECM mechs in Counter.

Hells yes. ECM gives you near immunity to missiles. Speed gives you near immunity to direct fire and offers a tighter turning circle and faster twist for duelling. (in case you're not aware engine size postively affects turning and movement with each high increment)

Also - you get a more pronounced effect from any DHS in your engineblock as compared to DHS about your slots. So it's in your interest in most mechs to pack the largest engine practical.

P.S. Sighface to the MWO new user experience having to work all this arcane bs out solo. :/

You absolutely need to be going 140+ kph in a light for decent survivability

Going to the extreme is usually a benefit.

If you are faster and you are winning a light fight -- kills secured.

If you are equal and winning a light fight -- might get away.

If you are slower and winning a light fight -- curses, they escaped.

If you are faster and losing a light fight -- escape is likely.

If you are equal and losing a light fight -- might have a chance to escape.

If you are slower and losing a light fight -- probably dead.

It's a bit of an oversimplification, but it still rings pretty true,

Theres also just not much else you can do even if you save weight by going to a smaller engine. You run out of crits with a couple of the builds. Most run streaks because they're auto hit and there isn't any ssrm4 or ssrm6 yet, 3mpl would heat you up pretty quick and large lasers are heavy. Also if you dropped down to a 255xl (129kph) it would only save you 1.5t compared to a 280xl (142kph) and you would lose the spot for a extra heatsink. And going lower than 250 would require you to start putting in external heatsinks. Though at that point you could get crits back by dropping ferro because you would save a decent bit of weight then. But then you won't be able to keep up with the other ecm lights.

How about a 200XL engine with 3 ML and 2SSRMs, max armor, and enough DHS to alpha strike several times before switching to SSRMs only for a few volleys (then you can fire the 3x ML again)?

Do you guys just never ever fire the 3ML?

(I'm sleep deprived here so you'll need to explain this to me :D).

Always go for biggest engine else a smart TDK pilot will dogfight the crap out of a slow raven...

Easy, DHS and the fact that free engine DHS is true 2.0 DHS makes it so you can fire a good amount before overheating. And if you do start to heat up you just use your speed to run off for 2 seconds and cool down. Or add 3 external DHS and almost never overheat.

Every time I can whilst continually piling on the SSRM's. Generally a go at a leg first just to troll unless the target has especially juicy parts elsewhere. In fact overheating and stalling is about the only mistake you can make in a 3L.

Honestly DHS gives you a good 3-4 alphas on the lasers before you need to hold back.
