Hi guys, I've recently been working towards unlocking elite tier for the hunchback. I've finished my founders, and have moved on to the 4J. What I wanted to ask was what kind of builds do you guys use for this mech, and what do you think of mine?

Currently, I've been running a 260 standard engine with 14 double heatsinks, endo steel structure, and 288 pts of armor

With an Lrm10 with two tons of ammo, 4 medium lasers, tag, and an SRM 6 with one ton of ammo

My optional build is to drop the 260 engine for a 200, and to upgrade the lrm10 into a lrm20.

Team fights, when I enter them are usually all over the place, and I can never really find my niche as a pure fire support mech. Half the time enemies have ECM which renders my lrms useless, or I have mechs straight on top of us before I can even get 3-4 good barrages off. Which brings up the question, why would i even pilot a medium mech if i was just going to sit back and fire missiles? So I played upon the functionality of a medium, which is to be able to function and adapt to any and every kind of battle scenario. LRM's for long ranges, medium lasers for mid range skirmishes, and srms for infighting. The firepower may look slighty underwhelming at first, but I'm moving at 85 kph, allowing me to outrun, and out distance all but XL engine larger mechs and scouts, and I have 14 double heatsinks, which keeps me practically level heat wise, as long as I don't literally spam alpha strike as soon as its on cd.

actually, you can drop to a 200 and go to 2 LRM15s. I have this mech but haven't worked on it lately... I started getting cataphracts and an awesome that made me forget about it. Still, I'd suggest not worrying about having an srm...leave that for the 4SP. it's worth noting that the 4J has the second most laser slots out of any hunchback, and way more laser slots than most mechs. This thing is made for dedicated LRM platforming...the hunch is too big to really try to get in and brawl, especially considering that 3 of the 6 laser points are on that hunch. Focus on LRMs, and keep lasers for backup if nescessary.

My main issue with doing this is that your moving pretty much as fast as a catapult. Why pilot a hunchback, moving as fast as a cata, with fewer weapons, armor, and lack of jump jets? You lose the advantages of being a medium mech by trying to focus yourself into a single combat role. This is my issue with the 4g, which is a straight up brawler, why pilot a hunch for cqc when you can cataphract or atlas? Why try to go super fast when you can be a light mech. Why try to LRM boat when you can be a stalker/cata... . Its through a varying combination of speed, power, and durablity that allow a medium mech to be successful.

Pack Artemis an TAG, it makes a big difference. TAG cuts though ECM, Artemis LRMs drill though CTs.

HBK-4J

4 Med Pulse Lasers
2 SRM 6
STD 200 engine 64.8 kph (71.3)
15 DHS
Endo Steel
4 tonnes SRM AMMO

This is mine. It runs a bit hot so really need to keep firing discipline but deals great damage and nets plenty of kills.

Go check out Helmstifs Hunchback guide.
There you will find a few ideas for the 4J, including my build, what runs 2 LRM10s, TAG and lazors.

It's fun, and works pretty well.

With the new patch i have yet to try artemis on it... though i shy away from the two tons extra. it might be wort it though. maybe exchange some med lasers to small ones...
