I am very new and considering purchasing my first mech with MC, be that a hero mech or not.

I did some searching on the forums, most of the posts were old speculating on what they could be.

This is my understanding of them:

• They have a feature that is not in other chassis making them (arguably) better.
  
• They can't be customized
  
• You get increased C-Bill income when you use them

Could someone please correct me or add to this list so I might better understand my choices?

Yes, but the Mech is NOT more powerfull then normal ones..

- unique paint and with
- cbills bonus

most of them are worse than other mechs of the same type

Not necessarily better, but different, unique, yes. Sometimes it can be made better, but obviously that's more a statement on the skill of the player than anything else because one could also argue another mech is better... at certain things, with certain players, in certain situations. Too complex for a black and white answer of better or not better to be honest.

Customize can mean two functional things in MWO.. colors/cammo, and weapons/loadout. You can -not- change colors of a hero mech, but you -can- change the weapons/engine/etc. At least, that's what I've read since I don't actually own any "cash for chasis" items in the game.

- The loadout of hero-mechs can be customized. The paintscheme cannot at the moment, but the colors will be switchable in the future.
- You get 30 % more Cbills after every mach.
- Unique hardpoints compared to the other variants. Most are just a sidegrade and not necessarily the best variants of their respective chassis.

Better than average hero mechs are the Flame and the Muromets.

I'm of the theory that if I'm going to spend MC on something, it should be something I can't really get with C-bills. So if I'm spending cash on a mech, I want it to be a hero.

The only real advantage they have is the 30% C-bill boost.

There's some conflicting info here. Since I own all but the latest Cicada in hero 'Mechs, I'll clear this up.

• You get a 30% Cbill bonus when you use it. This stacks up with Premium.
  
• You can customize their loadout. Although some are better off keeping their loadout and having double heat sinks installed.
  
• At the moment you cannot paint 'Mechs, but coming on the 19th or the 5th of next month, we will be able to change their colors. You will not be able to change their patterns.
  
• A hero 'Mech is a unique variant, separate and different from the others. Sometimes (like the Pretty Baby), they are a blend of previous variants (In the PB's case, it is the 8V with the 9M).
  
• Hero 'Mechs either have a story or book dedicated or partially describing them, or are created by PGI to fill a gap in Hero 'Mechs of certain Chassis.
  
• Like regular 'Mechs, you still should purchase an extra 'Mech Bay to ensure you have the room.
  
• Every hero has a perk to it besides the obvious, and a 'cost' to balance that.

Yen Lo Wang is the only Centurion that can carry an AC-20, but it loses the missile rack. The Pretty Baby gets superior speed, torso twist, everything a brawler needs -- but it is one of the worst 'Mechs to use for brawling due to the limitation in potential firepower if you set it up for that. The X-5 carries missiles and is the only Cicada that can. The Dragon Heroes each have their own perks (one can carry an AC-20 but it's torso mounted. The other can carry two ballistics and is arm-mounted making aiming easier). The Muromets to me is one of the more balanced setups with equal energy and ballistic hard points.

Hero mechs don't come with a mech bay slot?

Nope. I think they should. But they don't.

Makes getting slots for them pretty expensive when you get to where I'm at.



41 bays and it's still not enough.
Also just fixed the no X-5 problem. Just got him, and I'm at 41 'Mechs now.

X-5's second perk seems to be it is the only Cicada with both Arm and Side Torso mounted energy hardpoints. Others either mount exclusively on the arm or side torso.

I highly suggest that as a new player, before you purchase ANY mech (be it hero or otherwise) that you go to mwo.smurfy-net.de (Online mechlab utility) and make your mech before you buy it. That way you can see what you're getting before you pay for it! I can not stress enough how much I use the online mechlab, and it is a must for most veteran players.

Also consider the fact that some hero mechs come better stock than others. The older hero mechs (Yen Lo Wang, Twin Dragons, etc) do not come with DHS while the newer ones do along with XL Engines. The X5 Cicada is probably one of the more pimped out Hero mechs to be released that is good out of the box, meaning you won't need to stockpile another 3-5m c-bills to make it better because it already comes with XL, DHS, Endo, Ferro. Of course also consider what kind of mech and playstyle you enjoy. If you don't like the fast but lightly armored types, you might not like the X5.

I can only recommend that you read up properly and ask more questions before you make a purchase so that you get the right one for you.

Oh yes always do your homework on a chassis, and I highly suggest getting a standard non-hero mech beforehand also, to get a feel for your play style. Then once you know how you like to play, buy a hero mech accordingly.
