Ammo and Armor will change role warfare??? They are consumables.

Not alone, but so far there has been nothing of the highly advertised role warfare they've preached.

Many of us assumed some form of that would come with the XP system, but all the pilot/module trees are universal.

Many of us assumed some form of that would come with an actual COMMANDER position, and in fact one of the recent grognard flush threads quoted a dev post from some time ago where they talked about commanders multi-tasking to launch airstrikes and whatnot.

Now, however, we learn that "fire support" consumables will be universally available. This cannot in any way help a commander slot for role warfare.

Option One - everyone fires their own shart. Great, everyone is a MW3/BO2 character dropping airstrikes.

Option Two - only the "COMMANDER" can drop strikes...but he can drop them all. Even with a cooldown, this means the guy can just hide somewhere and watch his map feed and drop 8 strikes on the same person or persons until they're gone or everyone is dead.

Nothing in this puts a focus on being a "commander" in the sense of a dedicated role. One totally eliminates the need, one turns the commander into a guy who just burns out his team's strikes and then brawls for the rest of the match.

Given the way the game has gone, I think it is more likely everyone will use their own airstrike, because that would be much easier than an in-game option to enable or disable yours for use by whichever pug clicks "Take Command" first.

Keep in mind that we're seeing a very early implementation of consumables. I believe that, given time, as more consumables become available we WILL start to see role specialization (especially within organized teams). For example, Coolant Flush is obviously better suited toward high heat fighting builds. I agree that when consumables are first implemented, since there are only 3, we will likely see lots of players bringing all 3 to the field (partially because the other modules are not very useful). However as the number of available consumables / modules goes up, you will need to start making choices about what you want to bring.

Say I want to brawl: 360 Targeting is a good option, along with Coolant Flush. Air/Artillery strikes are not so good because of the range I'm going to be fighting at - I'll probably get caught in the blast unless I'm really careful.

I for one can't wait to see more module / consumable content so that we do start to see more role specialization.

Role warfare died when they implemented the worst design decision to date and that was "modules" as pilot progression.

I'll say again,

Consumables can only IMPROVE the importance of roles for each mech class.

Of the first few announced consumables, I can say that Air Strikes/Artillery only help to IMPROVE the role of scouts, for example.

Also, coolant flush only helps to IMPROVE the role of energy sniper builds.

Only a fool could think that ADDING some thing to the game could TAKE AWAY from any aspect of it.

Well, we do, and if you don't see it, then you are not performing any role other than dakka dakka shooty shooty... I suggest trying a formal team environment and then tell me that there are no roles.

That's an easily disprovable statement. What if they add a weapon that takes 1 critical, 1 ton, does 1,000 damage, and can fit in any hardpoint? That's adding something to the game yet it would ruin it completely.

We have role warfare right now, but unfortunately those roles are limited to AS7-D-DC, RVN-3L, CAT-A1, and CTF-3D. I would like to see other variants and chassis brought up in power level to those iconic four.
