Could a physical ballistic shield be plausible and or exist in the battle tech universe?

maybe the Axeman mech needs an ax and shield.. even if its just taken from the body and put to the shield to keep tonage the same would just be kinda neat.. hide behind a shield.. run over to enemy territory, cut down their trees and run way! :)

Maby for police riot control, would be impractical in combat.
Used to play Heavy Gear, used shields in that, but the gears were small and more humanoid.
Might be good for battle armor?
