There have been a lot of threads about machine gun (MG) and their (inability to do) damage to a mech in MWO. Believe me, NOBODY wants another streak fiasco with a 4MG light. So, using my incredible powers of video production on my craptastic 3yr old laptop, I give you:

Please watch before proceeding.

Spoiler

And Forrest Colony STILL has the screen darkening bug.

I use machine guns regardless of their validity because they sound FANTASTIC.

The double fire rate displayed in your video should be normal fire rate, imo.

So what's the point of the video? MG's SHOULD NOT be primary weapons, they, like the LBX10 AC, are crit seeking weapons. They should be used on heavily damaged mechs, to crit internals. Sure, ANY weapon in game can take out a mech, but certain weapons are better than others for a given task, as your video shows.

See the problem with crit seekers is that other weapons does the job better.

You sound like you're playing a game for fun or something. That's just crazy talk.

And? They don't do that well either. Just look at the video.

Small lasers generate about the same amount of heat (i.e. 0), do about 8 times the effective DPS, and weigh the same, plus they don't require ammo that can blow up and insta-KO you.

A balanced game is more fun. If the machine guns are totally cool (they are!) why not provide at least a little incentive to use one?

There is no such thing as tiered weapons, and I have no clue why that is even an argument. If they are meant to be crit seekers only, are you going to step out of the way in your assault to let the MG spider strip the internals? No. You are going to finish them and get the kill, which makes having crit seeking weapons in game a total joke. I get the feeling that the resistance is really about making sure light pilots with ballistic hard points are gimped to ineffectiveness by denying them the ONLY ballistic weapon that will fit their weight. Terror indeed.

I was using them effectively as a form of crowd control on my dragon 5-N. Use bigger weapons (LLas, SRM6, etc) to strip armor, use 2 MG's to strip components. I literally had two mechs in the same match who had a clear advantage in terms of fire power (1 UAC5x3 Ilya, 1 awesome) run away once their armor was stripped due to the sudden loss of components. They still had 1-2 chunks left with armor left and at that point it seemed pretty obvious they wanted to keep their few remaining components.

Machine guns are NOT something that can stand on their own, but they do function admirably as a support weapon when used intelligently.

You might have noticed, but the mechs with guns in their CTs lost those right quick after their armor dropped. That's the main purpose of MGs. Use your SL to strip armor and your MGs to blow components. Or, better yet, drop your ammo (8k rounds seems like way too much) and upgrade to a ML or MPL or something. Use that to do damage and your MGs to rip out components.

MG's are anti-infantry weapons in a game that doesn't have infantry, so yeah, they are useless.

If we could mount an energy weapon on a ballistic hard point, then this would be good advice.

Use machine guns to crit equipment? I have a better idea...I'll use a real weapon (likely the one I just stripped the armor with) to completely blow the component housing that equipment off the enemy mech in less time. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

'Support' is rather loose term, especially since LRMs are considered 'Support' weapons.

You are defining them as currently programmed, or as you think they should be.

You put em on a Dragon with more fire power than any Stock Spider-5K or Raven-4X, that require small ballistics like MG's to compete. Round of applause.

Please, take a Stock Spider-5K, Raven-4X, Cicada-3C for a spin and tell us all how much fun you had 'supporting' with 2 MG's. MWO needs to be balanced from stock first, then up, not the other way around.

Crit seeking weapon aahahahahahaahahahaha

hahahahahaha

ha ha ha

I'm sorry. Do you know what does crits better?
Small laser.
ML
MPL
AC2
AC5
UAC5
AC10
LL
LPL
PPC
AC20
Gauss Rifle.
SRMs
LRMs
Streaks

Instant component destruction if you can do this thing called aiming instead of just face humping your target and hoping you don't get one of those Good weapons to the back for your trouble.

Not only that, but those above weapons are actually useful for the part of the process that gets you and your teams kill generation in the first place, called damage. And they all do it -faster- than MGs which make them better suited for destroying someone's face. Faster means, you don't have to face hump to insure you get all rounds on target. Faster means less TOT required, which means more time murdering someone else. That they actually do Damage in their own right means it's not a complete waste of volley if your opponent is not completely comatose, and is actually willing to rotate their torso, slow down or speed up to get you off of their weak point.

MGs are the weapons of Chumps that don't know better.

The thing with MGs is that when you do get a kill with them it is immensely satisfying, and it is considered the height of good form to proudly announce 'MACHINE GUN KILL!" in chat

I'll put this into perspective:
I was running on alpine in my YLW, my usual mech. AC20, 6 tons of ammo, 2 ML's. Simple setup, effective.
I see a dragon with 3 machine guns running at me. I scoff. I shoot him, mess him up a bit and start brawling. I even go so far as to deliberately target the laser arms as they are the ones with the "real" weapons.

I fire and... nothing.

AC20 is gone.
Both Medium Lasers in the chest are gone - which is a virtual rarity.

At this point, I was neutered and at his mercy.

This is a true story; it's the only reason I ever even considered looking at MG's. Prior to that, I held your exact stance. I'm not saying there's not a better use of space in most cases. I prefer UAC5's, myself. But in reality if you are filling space for 1.5T and want something with some utility it IS an option, if used intelligently (as stated before).

Machineguns - Death by a thousand cuts...or four thousand depending on your ammo count.
