Here's a few things that took me about 100 games to figure out:

7) If you're in a brawl with a much larger mech, get behind them and away from their weapons. You're likely faster than they are, and taking less shots to focus on better positioning will help in the long run. In addition, most mechs have weak rear armor and can be an easy kill.

One note about the back of mechs. When time permits, try to aim for the side rear torsos rather than the center. The reason is three-fold. First, the amount of armor in the rear side torsos of most mechs is very low. Second, if you take out a side torso, the mech loses that torso, any weapons and ammo (which may cause an ammo explosion) and also loses the use of the arm on that side. It's one way to severely damage a mech very quickly. Third, if the mech has an XL engine, taking out the side torso means that the engine is destroyed, which means that the mech is destroyed.

Buy a new mouse. I played FPS games for years with a ****** mouse. I finally bought a real gaming mouse and a real gaming keyboard. I always thought it doesnt make that big of a difference but it does. I have a Logitech G500 and its really accurate and you can adjust the DPI-level of it on the fly. If you play games a lot I think spending about 100€ isnt that big of a deal and it really makes a difference.

It's almost certainly inexperience at this point. It can be disorienting being limited by the mech's slow turn speed while trying to aim.

In addition to inexperience there is also the problem that the current ELO system attempts to group players together who have the same experience level. This system was developed in an effort to ensure that new players have a more enjoyable experience instead of just being cannon fodder. Unfortunately, this also means that those who are new to the game are often thrown in with other players in the same boat, rather than having a few experienced players who are able to show one the ropes, so to speak.

As a bit of advice, don't forget to use chat and team up with somebody. The mechs that I use most often have TAG, so I will usually ask if anyone has LRMs and let them know that I have TAG.

Stick with the game. It does get easier, but there is a very steep learning curve.

I almost can't begin to believe that the people I'm against are supposed to be my skill level. Almost every match I'm in ends in a loss, and it's not even close. My team gets absolutely mauled. Most of the matches are 8-0 losses for my team. The most damage anyone on our team deals is about 20 before our whole team is brutally wiped out. Are these teams I'm against really as good as I am? How am I losing this horribly? I think I've won about 5 out of 30 games. =\

Hey Alan, I guess first what is your build for the Atlas (also what type is it?). Use the following site to save and share builds as well as research weapons: http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/

How are you playing the game.

Also what are your internet connection (ping) and specs (computer hardware, mouse DPI settings, ets)?

Despite the title, I'm asking a serious question. I seem to have an incredibly hard time getting my targeting reticle on the target. Other than the real possibility that I just suck, is there something about my mouse or its settings could be causing me trouble?

Are there targeting 'tricks' that I should know? I don't play much FPS, could it just be inexperience? Think back to when you were learning, are there things I can try to get better?

How are your framerates? Framerates can seriously affect game play.

Practice, Practice, Practice, Practice.

You will have bad days and good days.

When you die, (Which you will allot... Everyone dose) Spectate until the END of the match. Watch other players and how they play. Then take a look at your stats and try to find areas that you can improve in.

Find some people who want to play with you.
Invite me as a friend and i'll pull you into my lance and C3 chan if i have the space.

I'm throwing my hat in with those that say get a mouse with on-the-fly DPI adjustments. I haven't found any single DPI setting that works across all the mechs I like to play, so it is nice to be able to fine-tune for different chassis and loadout options.

On the subject of mouse sensitivity: Top E sporters apparently rarely play with more than 1.8k dpi setting. By all means see what suits you, but this makes a good starting point.

As someone who drops into this game once a weekend, I also think the latest couple of patches has ruined the game for occasional players. Its impossible to do well at this game if your ping is over 100 and you aren't playing 24/7. After a few weeknds playing I got a little better and started to win as meany as I lost, but now its an utter mess. Just played for 2 hours and haven't won a single thing. I think I might leave the game for something else

Please stick with it Macro.
As mentioned in the beginning of the thread it can be rough for 2-300 games. Just be patient. The game is worth it, especially playing with a group.

Just to explain: MacroPhotoFly: While ELO does work, it does not guarantee avoiding the occasional losing streak. Just yesterday I had more than 7 losses in a row, for instance.

What it does do is try and make for a more evenly matched experience AS A WHOLE, TAKEN OVER TIME. Statistical things take a bit of time to improve as the algorithm "gets to know you".
Give it time, take a break.
At one game a weekend ELO is going to be slow sorting you into the right bracket most of the time

I have to say I tried again this evening. Its just a waste of time. Beginners stand no chance if you have a lag over 100. I have XL engines and decent weaponary and I get fried all the time now. I'm like 1 win in a 100. Whatever they did in the last release absolutely killed the game for me.
I used to be able to stand a chance with some speed, but they did something with the lag shield and I get fired by lasers, missles, etc.

What they did is fix the lag shield. It used to be that high-ping players were nearly impossible to hit because of the server-side hit recognition.

If you are still getting killed, I'd recommend a headset and a group. The thing that kills most people is that you allow yourself to be the single target - when three to four mechs are concentrating on a single target, you just won't survive.

I suspect you aren't turning your legs at the same time your torso is moving. Use "A" and "D" to pivot whilst yr mouse is moving.

While it is harder with a high ping it isn't a game-breaker. My ping is 300ms and I'm doing ok. 3000 games, 1700wins/1400 losses, 1.75 kdr. I recommend streaks and lrms and lasers to start with.

lower your mouse sensitivity might help

lowering the ping shield has collapsed my game. It was a running game - avoiding big guys and getting in close for the ping to allow me to hit. Now I get wiped by ppc's getting me at range (dragon taken out in two hits) or missiles taking me out in one hit (one LRM 15 hit and killed my undamaged Raven - thats not a game). I am running, rotating and twisting torso at same time, but its no fun when you are taken down in one or two hits (and yes my armour is up pretty high).
Okay maybe ECM and lag shield helped me, but at least I could play. All over now
