Taken from Ask the Devs Answers #33: Bryan Ekman - Creative Director - Piranha Games Inc.

Werewolf486: Can we have an On/Off switch for chat?

Bryan Ekman: No plans.

Personally I'm disappointed with Bryan and all of PGI for this answer. After so many have asked for it, I've sent a few emails, posted a few threads and the status is "No plans". So they haven't listened to those of us who would like the ability to Turn Off Chat.

Those of us that want this option to be put into the game please post a reply about it in this thread, voice your desire to at have the option to turn off chat. Show your support for a simple option to turn off the vulgarity and debauchery that we should not be forced to put up with. They may have the right to say it, but we should have the right to turn it off. If you just don't want to see it, don't want your children to see it while you play, or want your children to be able to play without being accosted by certain behavior then you should be asking for the option to Turn Chat ON/OFF.

Thank you

PGI Stand up for what is right and put this option into MWO, it would take you less then 2 hours to write the code and test it!

This is something I'm really curious about. How hard can it possibly be to add the code to enable/disable the chat window? or have commands like /ignore /block etc?

I can only assume cryengine is horribly limited in this manner, or something else is going on. Very hard to understand without being given proper explanations as to why this game suffers such extreme limitations compared to many others - ie EVE can host thousands across the world on one region, but MWO we need split regions? Internet chat, the most basic of all things, lobbies, stuff we see from WoW to MUD, not possible?

I think the splitting of regions is someone's global idea (eg, some executive that doesn't quite understand the impact of these things). To some extent, if this game was initially deployed regionally, this would not be an issue IMO.

I would far more prefer to see a filter put in. If you give people the option of disabling it there's no way to even hope pugs/other players might be catching tactical updates.

The current gaming culture is rife with such behaviour, however, it is noticably low to non-existent in my experience.

Just let it slide off your back, mate, the game needs in-game chat. If you turn it off, you could end up dieing sooner than you like.

Have you tried electrical tape over the game chat region?

This isn't a hard thing to do in Cryengine from what I've been told. As for the reason for wanting the option to turn off chat, if you read my sig, you'd know it has nothing to do with bothering me, it's more for giving my children the chance to play MWO instead of being stuck with MW4. I don't want them to read what's being put in chat, and if they are playing it would be with me, their mother, or our friends in TS. We'd be giving the direction instead of the pugs or adult players.

As a parent i refuse to even let my kids have a cell phone until they have a license to drive, they don't have facebook pages, their internet time is monitored, they aren't allowed to do google searches as I've seen pics of topless girls come up while searching for George Washington. I'm just trying to be a responsable parent to my children and raise them the best we can. I'd like to be able to drop with them without putting tape on my monitor(not an origional idea) and enjoy some family gaming time.

Filters are for some peolple, not for us at this point. I don't have an opinion either way on filters, I can take'm or leave'm. But I think ALL games should have the ability to disable Chat.

You sound like a horrible, self righteous tyrant of a parent. The kids have already heard all the words you;re trying to shield them from, and a booby never killed anyone.

You should ask yourself if this game is right for them. The original Mechwarrior series was rated T (13+) by the ESRB. Children under the age of 13 cannot agree to the terms of service for playing Mechwarrior Online, and therefore are assumed to not be playing it at all. For this reason, PGI has no obligation to censor game functions.

If your children are over the age of 13, then they've heard it all before. Your best approach is to teach them how to deal with negative behavior instead of pretending it doesn't exist. If they hit 18 without knowing how to deal with the world, well, college/military is going to be very interesting.

It's not. PGI has other plans. Something something.
Who cares about turning on off the chat? It vanishes so fast, anyway.

it would appear you created your own problem by teaching your children how to read...

but by all means, keep sheltering them so that when they do finally have to interact with the real world, they are so apalled by it they too will vow to be hyper sensitive and shelter their offspring from the "dirty" real world.

MWO is one of the gentlest F2P game I have seen.

I really think you should stick to board games for "family time".

EVE spent a lot time in development and more money to work with. EVE allows thousands of people in one world because there universe is hosted on a bunch of different servers, also because they have more money to work with. I believe there is a node for every system you can access through a jump gate in that game.

As a veteran of many MMO games over the years, I must say that MWO is nearly devoid of the so called "innappropriate references" you allude to. Mwo has the 'cleanest' chat of any game I have ever played. In my opinion, your request is completely unecessary and unneeded.

Is this a serious post or a troll? If you are blocking your kids from google searches, it would make sense that they shouldn't be allowed to play pc games / have access to a computer with an internet connection. It just doesn't logically follow. What about that hula girl? Should spectating other players be blocked as well? I suppose that will be the next.

What game are you playing? There is hardly any chat during games. Most chat I've seen when one guy decides to say "gl hf". Obviously there is no plans from pgi to add useless features.
