Player run tourneys that further fragment the playerbase are useless.

Tourneys in general are the life blood of any game that wishes to be more than a novelty joke after a year or two. Having said that, the player level skill cap of this game is low, and many current restriction already put a big dent in the ability to play this anymore than casually.

A thriving competitive circuit is the life-blood of any competitive game. Like it or not, MWO is a competitive title.

It's a bit more complicated than that.

Proxis Community Warfare league you could take all your 8 x 100 ton mechs as soon as you can afford them. Kong should join.

I'm curious if anyone thinks it at least gives PGI research into popular features for Planetary

I'm trying to think of the big competitive games that come to mind, and I get:

- CS:S/1.6
- LoL
- DotA 2
- StarCraft II
- Halo

I've omitted CoD and BF3 because no one watches the competitions or gives a damn about how they resolve for whatever reason (even though they are incredibly popular to watch on youtube), but I can't think of any big prize money competitive games I'm missing.

None of these have notable player run leagues. Everything is done from the top down, or by enormous third party organizations, and it works really, really well. The third party organizations correspond closely with these guys, and balance is a deadly serious affair that ultimately leads to a better play experience for dudes who are competitive in the strictly casual sense like me(i.e. I am not interested in having scheduled tourneys or whatever; I want to log on and get a ladder game or I want to go have some fun in unranked games, like StarCraft).

In the wake of these guys, player run leagues seem like a lot of effort to potentially fracture and damage the community. I scoff at the notion that people would actually spend MC on them also.

What PGI should do is rip off every good idea Riot has and then make the appropriate modifications to keep things brisk (doesn't make sense to have 5 minutes of setup for a 5 minute game, but I can think of several obvious workarounds for this). No player run leagues. Everything centralized. It's better for PGI, it's better for us, and I think it would save the guys who run those leagues a whole lot of work.

Up until the point where PGI finally gets a proper game client scraped together, player run leagues are a nice stopgap, but they should never be allowed to become a solution.

I used to play in some CS 1.6/Source tournaments, even managed to get some places every now and then. One of the best thing about them was the fact that they weren't run by players.
Some points:(based on experience/opinion obviously)

- The groups that ran them (usually) had no vested in who who won. Player run tournaments tend to be run by people playing in the tournament. Bad juju.

-Running a tournament properly isn't easy - It's not as simple as setting up a ladder and going at it. Games need to be refereed, then reviewed, then if a disagreement comes up there needs to be a decision, and all people involved in those processes need to be unbiased (ie, not participants in the tournament)

lastly, I don't really see MWO (in it's current incarnation) as a particularly competitive game. Cheese builds and min/maxing is a MASSIVE issue to being a properly competitive game. For a game to be deemed competitive, every single game should come down to player skill, and player skill alone, and I'm afraid MWO just doesn't. Disagree if you like, but I'm pretty confident that you'll find a direct causation between certain builds/team compositions and victors.

TL;DR: Players who want do be involved in player run leagues, power to you =) Is it useful to PGI? No, this game is no where near an eSports level (not that thats a bad thing mind you)

So your complaint is the game is imbalanced not really related to player run leagues.

As far as a vested interest... there are no available rewards for winning...

Why do you think this is so important? There's like 100 of you guys. Why does the rest of the community have to take a back seat to you getting to play games against "worthy opponents"?

If I would have to judge the quality of the PGI offering from the last two tournaments then any initiative from the community would be a good thing and would directly benefit PGI as well.

I don't think we should have to pay MC for something that should have been available from the start ie. a lobby system

Omg yes. Pre-drop mech select is a must. They should do it like in DotA 2, so that you've got 50 seconds before the match begins to discuss and fill in the holes left by the insta-lockers, then get a report system going for folks who don't communicate.

Having people say "Oh, MWO is just LoL with mechs" sounds like a dismissive comment, but this is actually an attitude that they should be desperately trying to cultivate. Well, if they like fame and success.
