So when you overheat to the extent that the 'mechs computer system steps in and shuts down, if you allow it to remain shutdown until it is safe to turn on again, shouldn't it be your 'mechs system just autostarting? Not you pressing a button or flipping a switch?

I think I would push a button to restart as soon as possible instead of the computer deciding.

So technically it is the system starting back up? Not your mechwarrior inherently knowing that the heat is safe now?

Well, these macines according to lore are a few centuries old. Would you trust a computer that old?
I misunderstood your original post so forgive the random responce.

the pilot is probably just counting to twenty before he flips the switch
if he presses its earlier , nothing will happen

And don't forget that the pilot is sat in the cockpit which is usually located above the centre torso where the reactor is. They can probably feel when the mech is cool enough to switch back on.

Manual interlock, high heat makes mech computers go wibbly, that computer then gets to decide when to turn on. Doesn't take much of a glitch to have it turn on and promptly melt down. Any kind of dangerous equipment like this is riddled with both automated and manual interlocks to prevent that.
Or they thought it looked cool.

It used to be manual start up, but they changed it to this in one of the updates. I'm assuming the change was made because there were a number of complaints about the start up response time being so slow that people would end up shutting down again when they hit P too many times.
