Use this site for information and to mess around with builds before you actually build a mech in game: http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/
Don't get caught up in the negativity of the forums. So many people are so passionate about BT and MW they can't get passed their own ideas of how it should be.
If you have more specific questions you can check out the Player Help and Guides forums at the top of the forums page.
The learning curve is rough. I've described it as hitting your head against a brick wall till the wall breaks. That however was before the cadet bonus (bonus money for the first 25 games you play) and the training ground map being added, so it shouldn't be as bad as before.

Then prepare to get shock and awe inflicted for a few battles (even a few days) while you learn the maps.
Try to have fun. That is most important.

- Use cover dont stay in the open to long
- Stick with your team
- For spotting other mechs in the distance use "h" for thermal vision (works in dark maps aswell better then night vision).
- Watch your heat, if you do powerdown because of overheating use ''p'' to power op again.
- Move your torso to spread damage around.

Yep. There's dummy targets to shoot at, but keep in mind, hitting real moving mechs is a bit harder.

This. Training grounds is probably your best bet, as this MW title has a much different playstyle than all the others. You'll notice very quickly.
Ok, weapons time: machine guns do no damage, flamers are useless, AC2s are a monster if you stack them, Gauss is extremely fragile, PPCs have a minimum range of 90, LRMs have a minimum range of 180, SRMs will tear you to shreds, SSRMs will make you want to quit if you're in a light without ECM, NARC does nothing, Command Console does nothing, TAG is the only way to get past ECM...
Hmm what else... t is global chat, y is team chat, B brings up the map, heat sinks are very ineffective in this game compared to previous titles so hear management is a lot more difficult, Ferro Fibrous isn't worth it unless you are in a light with very few weapons, Endo Steel is 7 time out of 10 the best bet, always upgrade to DHS when you have enough money to do so because engine DHS dissipate 2 heat and placed DHS dissipate 1.4.
MOST IMPORTANTLY: If you are getting really disheartened and feel like you're getting stomped match after match, download team speak and JOIN A UNIT. It's a completely different game! You can PM me on this site and I can tell you everything you need to know!

If you are looking to get a hero mech the best among them currently is either the llya muromets or the Flame hero(may be wrong but the one with 4 energy hardpoints).
If your using upgrades typically the priority for useful to extra crit space take is, 1 double heatsinks, 2 Endo Steel, 3 Ferro fiberous, 4 Artemis(this is last due to only being used in a select # of builds).
Initially stay away from xl engines in all but light mechs until you get a feel for torso twisting to focus damage on other points.
Teamspeak NA server is extremely useful for increasing the credit generation during your first 25 matches(cadet bonus) and beyond.
Circle recticle is your arms cross hair is your body.

some things I wish I knew when I started:
Save your C bills! New players get a huge bonus to start the game, so save up until you find a mech that you think is neat. It's tough right now for new players to find that perfect fit for them, play style, tonnage, weapon load-outs are confusing and a lot to think about and take in, so be patient. My best advice is to not buy a mech right away. Save your money, your c bills and wait for sales. Make notes about the way each mech plays, and how your enemy defeats you. The best way to learn is from losing.
Most mechs come stock with a good balance of weapons, but it wont be perfect for you. You will need to play around with your first mech to find that perfect balance of heat/weapon power/speed/armor.
Biggest thing is never sell a weapon or a mech. Things get rebalanced here, weapons find a new home on other mechs and so on. you only get half the value back for an item when you sell it, so its often much better to hang on to those medium lasers and such.
Also don't rage quit, sometimes dying early is a good thing, as you can watch somebody play with a similar build or mech and ask questions, or take note of what they do.
hope to see you on the battlefield!
Good luck and have fun out there.

- Get a feel for moving your mech around (just pick trial mechs, while they suck, they do work)
- Learn how weapon groupings work (add/remove weapons from groups with the arrow keys and right control key).
- Try the different vision modes, see how they work.
- Fire at the dummy targets, get a feel for lining up shots when you're moving.
Once you're dropping in real matches:
- Do not stop moving.
- If you're being fired at, twist your torso around to spread the damage.
- Never run directly at your targets, or directly away from them. Move at an angle to them, and change directions as unpredictably as you can.
- Pick a teammate, stick close to them, fire at what they fire at. Do NOT move into their line of fire, however, and don't shoot them yourself.
- Press R to target opponents. Always have someone targetted, because this can allow friendlies to target them as well - which can mean friendly mechs firing LRM's even though they can't see their target. You'll gain bonus XP and money for this as well (spotting targets)
