Idea:
We are to design a trial mech.
The CTF-3D is a harsh mistress in terms of loadout, but this one really lets new players try the various aspects of the chassis and is balanced in terms of engagement range.
They can try it as a poptart sniper junior, they can try it as a mini-Ilya Muromets, etc.
The design is easy to use, with only 3 weapon groups (not too confusing on new players), each with distinct range and purpose. ERPPC is in the torso, because there it is mounted high which really helps with sniping behind cover (when mounted in the arms, you are prone to shooting the ground with it, and have to expose more of your mech).
A bit harsh on heat levels, but in case of a trial mech it is acceptable (in comparison with the stock variants' heat efficiencies), since it forces the player to decide which weapon to use, instead of just alpha striking every time, introducing her/him to heat discipline. Note that if the player does not use the ERPPC, heat efficiency is 1.48, so it gives ample room for brawling without overheating. For critical alpha strikes, the ERPPC is still there, without any range limits.
UAC-5 ammo seems limited, but given the (ammunition-independent) ERPPC for long range engagement, it should be enough for medium and close range bursting, not to mention that I don't use more than 5 tons in my 3D anyways, so it is not that low.
The XL300 is to shed light on the advantages of up-rating the engine (more heat sinks without critical space loss, more speed).
