This is my most successful configuration, based on the MDG-1A Rakshasa modified for the CPLT chassis and capabilities.

This configuration is designed for maximum tactical and strategic flexibility. Maximum speed, combined with full Jump capability, an Anti-Missile system, and nearly maximum armor allow this mech to adapt to whatever situation it finds itself in, as well as allowing the 'mech to keep pace with strike units.

The main weapons are a pair of Large Lasers and a pair of Medium Lasers, providing good pinpoint direct fire combat ability. The secondary weapons are a pair of LRM 5 launchers that retain the ability of the 'mech to support with indirect fire as opportunity permits. While the LRMs do limited damage, they are ammunition-efficient and do not force the Catapult to significantly sacrifice capability in direct-fire combat to mount. With 17 Double Heatsinks, the mech can sustain firing its laser array for several salvoes before needing to cool.

Utilizing the full capabilties of this battlemech, this configuration offers the widest range of possible mission profiles and combat options.

An alternate version that is closer to the original MDG-1A Rakshasa sacrifices the Jump Jets and Anti-Missile System to upgrade the LRM launchers to LRM 10s, but this version tends to be less able to adapt to some conditions, and I find it does not significantly increase overall performance.

Simple, sturdy, effective. No ammo to worry about (running out, or being shot and exploding). All weapons use the same range. Weapons are balanced across the chassis, and the chassis itself is symmetrical. 36pt alpha. Full armor. Decent speed for a Heavy. No wasted tonnage. Solid heat management. Standard engine for extra durability. Pushed a little armor to the rear to help stand up to pesky Lights.

Easy to swap engines to an XL-325, adding an additional Large Laser and one more DHS, to gain a bit more speed and more firepower (45pt alpha).

I have been toying with this build.

A mid ranged, direct fire Cat rocking a couple of LRM10+artemis combined with TAG and a PPC to help in the ecm pervalent battlefield. It also packs a pair of MPLas to help deal with any scouts getting under missle/ppc range. Not the fastest Cat on the block but heavily armoured enough to play support.

Sister build to the one above. This sports an XL-325 engine, an additional Large Laser, an additional DHS (dual heatsink), and retains all of the benefits of the other build except for the added vulnerability of the XL engine. On the upside, it has zero wasted slots or tonnage and ups the alpha to 45pts for a slight trade-off in heat management.

This Dragon starts a fights as sniper with 2 ER PPC, preferably near the base. Once the inevitable ECM lights show up he chases them down alternating PPC shots to disable their ECM shield keeping suppression fire with MGs (shoot in front of them) and streaks occasionally popping in when PPC counters ECM. Any spots where 2 PPCs hit, the 3 MGs will start eating internals QUICKLY.

Using this build for a trial mech will also provide a lot of people with exposure to the oft discussed MG, along with providing a lot of data to developers on how effectively it is/is not used. Please check my stats out on this mech build if you doubt it's effectiveness.

A simple, versatile, and battle-tested DRG-1N, well suited for teaching newer pilots about different combat ranges and weapon types. Quick and heat-efficient, the DragonForcer can engage foes at any distance with its mix of medium-long range direct-fire weapons and a powerful bank of SRMs in its center torso. Its speed allows it to respond to changing battlefield conditions or to disengage from fights it doesn't like while its simple, methodical armament allows its pilot to focus on the fight rather than on what their own 'Mech is doing.

All possible upgrades as well as an XL engine make the DragonForcer an expensive proposition and space within the chassis is very tight (read: maxed out), but the 'Mech performs admirably in combat conditions even in the hands of a completely green pilot (no efficiencies needed, great for new players!) and has proven itself to its designer on the battlefield many times over.

Mechlab link CTF-2X

I've built it and its fun to play!
I wanted my Trial mech to have a real mixture of weapons, reasonble speed and survivability, yet have room for improvement and not punish the Wielder.

I chose a moderate engine, the 250 since it gives a respectable turn of speed, contains enough heatsinks to just work on its own and get the best out of the DHS the design uses.
Weaponry wise I went in for one each weapon group, so a LRM 10 for long range support, and a SRM 4 for extra close range punch. These weapons showcase thier own capabilitys well and introduce minimum and maximum ranges well. I chose the SRM4 over the streak to show a different weapon type rather than have a second lock on weapon, the fact it launches in one volley also helps.
The Combination of a torso ER=PPC and a AC-10 is excellent, giving either a chain fire 1-2 blow or a linked punch with respectable range. I chose the ER over the standard PPC to avoid punishing close range fights, the LRM launcher does enough of that and also its a good weapon at all ranges and is unique in having a anti ECM effect.
The two medium lasers that round off the armament give a insight into the workhorse weapon of choice and help the mechs close range offensive.
In short, it can snipe, give limited indirect support, brawl reasonably well and move at a sensible pace.

I Chose to avoid an XL to avoid the new player "Why did my mech die, I still had centre torso left" issue, and to keep purchase costs down (assuming the variant is available to purchase).

Case on both sides will keep the mech going for longer too, and with a Balanced armament the mech is quite capable even if it loses a side torso.

13 DHS keep the mech firing for quite a while as long as the correct weapons for the ranges are used.

In short I think i've built a mech that teaches and rewards good play, yet can still alpha well if needed.

Why Dead mans shoes? well

Mech is designed for learning basic fundamentals of jump jetting (or jump sniping) and cover. Chain firing the ER PPCs make heat much more sustainable as the large pulse laser is designed for close combat vs lights, but also improves synergy with jump sniping. LPLs are also great for cooling down, as that generates the least amount of heat, allowing you to occasionally get an occasional single ER PPC shot in, including hot maps like Caustic. Heat management is obviously crucial to this enemy dependent build, but firing any one weapon while under the "Heat Level Critical" threshold of 80% is doable.

This build is optimal for killing large mechs with the ppcs and can at least handle itself against light mechs with the pulse laser. Patience is required to get the most out of the mech and promotes teamplay through being an effecting support sniper. It has speed to get you where you need to go as a heavy, plus you quickly learn about the weapons themselves and the dos and don't of heat management and engagements. There is a limited range of the weaponry since none of the weapons are on the arms, but with the massive torso twist, that can make up for that deficiency plus they are well protected due to being part of the torsos.

Edit: It's good for newbies, as it is just as good for veterans, but vets tend to use a different jump sniper... at least this will get you to learn the basics at least.
