That doesn't mean it was a good game. It is a habit and basically a ritual. You say it even if you don't mean it. And on an online game you can't see the reactions of the players, thus you lose all unspoken meaning, thus extra effort you put in such as saying more than GG means a crap ton more than just saying just GG because of habit.

But, if I say more than "gg" then it is entirely possible that it will be considered even more rude. What if I said "Well fought" or "You almost won that one" or "Good Fight"? How are any of those much better than "Good Game"? And if it is a habit, it is a good habit to have, showing even a little respect to an opponent is not a wasted effort, he may be on your team next match.

And we are also bound by time constraints in which to make a comment, be it because someone is a poor typist, or because they want to get their comment out before the other team DCs.

Yet the NBA players and the Junior team would still line up, shake hands and say "Good Game"

edit: for a response to the post above me

I guess it come down to this: You can look at the "gg" as an expression of superiority over your team, a mocking statement meant to rub in your loss, or you can accept it as a show of good sportsmanship, even you if was not offered as such. In an on-line game where you can not see the opposing players expressions and body language the interpretation of the "gg" is up to you. I suggest that you either take it as an appreciation for the preceding match, or ignore it. But getting upset over it shows as much about yourself as it does about the person offering it.

Fair enough, tomato tomato. I can see what you're saying. I don't want to scrape too deep with this because it's for sure bound to dip into an argument or someone getting offended lol, but while you're stating that it reflects badly to see it as mockingly under the assumption that everyone is being sincere, I see it like the meaning should be preserved to some extent. I mean it doesn't make me flaming red hot with rage every time i see GG, and I think okay i'll accept it as sincere and I say GG. I'm on the fence so i bounce back and forth between accepting it and sincere and letting it continue, or fight it and try to keep it "sacred". So.. I don't really know what to do. I guess it's one of those internet things where because of the huge difference in opinions, this is just a grey matter that needs to remain grey, and you just got to deal with it and do your own thing.

Probably yeah, but I doubt any of them would actually think it was a good game more than an uneven match-up.

Also seriously doubt people would cram for front row seats to this "good game."

You are partly correct. But I have been to "exhibition games" where a minor league team was totally roflstomped by a professional team. It was almost pathetic how lopsided the game was. The losing team still shook hands, still acted like good sports, and so did the winning team. Part of being a good sport is swallowing your pride and congratulating the winning team, no matter how bitter the loss.

I respect your post, and your opinion. I am simply offering mine as well. And I must confess to a certain amount of shock that this thread has not devolved into a complete whine and flame fest.

And yet they played the game anyway without screaming how unfair it was. It's called 'character'.

Because most matches are 8-0 8-1 8-2.. AND these are not good games... If your team steamrolls then just walk away.. If u wanna say GG say it to your team only..

I dont care if its just something u always have to say.. IT's not sportsman ship if it's just something u feel obligated to say outta habit.. Because then u get the bad habit of saying it when you shouldnt..

You just dont go up to someone who's left dying after a huge slaughter of a massacre (100's dead to u losing only like 5) and kneel down and tell him good fight before he dies.. YOU JUST DONT.. Why because it wasent even close..

IF less than half your team is left standing as you are victorious then it was a hard fought match and indeed a good match. Otherwise you pretty much just stomped the other team and saying GG is like grinding your boot in thier face..

Saying good game to an opponent in a closely contested match is good.. But when u totally beat the snot out of them you just dont say anything.. You dont.. Why because it was not good in the slightest for them.. They already feel frustrated and bad no need to make them feel worse by letting them know you had a good or great game..

I'm just tired of hearing it after my team gets slaughterd for many dumb reasons, most often of which is the matchmaker screwing us over

TL:DR If u really feel the need to keep saying it.. just congratulate your team only on the 8-0 8-1 8-2 matches then.. Praise the other team of a hard fought battle when it was indeed a close one..

Did you want GG patched out?

Or do you think people with MC should be able to buy a "GG" and display it at the end of the game?
