If they did add something like this, as a way to throw the clanners a bone as well as keep it within BT canon, they could call the game mode "Zellbrigen," and enforce the rules associated with clan honor dueling.

Well I just figured inviting through friends list would be an easy mechanic, they don't actually have to be your friend. Also, regarding weight matches, it should be flexible, you might want to duel somebody in differing mechs to prove a point or sandbox.
Also, if you like this idea, please "like" the OP guys!

For this you can go a bit further. Have 4 restricted weight classes and 1 Unrestricted. Going beyond that would be Chassis specific matches. (i.e. Hunchback-Only)
All in all, i like the idea of arena style matches. +1

In the mean time, why not just allow players to do like a 4 man drop in the training grounds mode. 10x easier

That would be good for sandboxing some things, but you can't target friendly mechs.

Though for 1v1s I don't care either way, duels are boring imo

Only half hearted suggestion!
Imagine a group leader can invite an other group like this, no matter if group consists of 1 or 8 players.
This way you could have everything from 1v1 to 8v8 or even a 1v4 for trials of position or something.

I don't see why there would be technical restrictions.

This is actually a valid concern. It depends on how the backend structure of the server is done, but it is very possible that server resources can be eaten up by a lot of 1v1 rooms being made. I'm familiar with at least one other game that removed the ability to do 1v1 fights (making it a minimum of 5v5) due to the 1v1 rooms eating up sever capacity.

Let's say for all intents and purposes 1v1s are not possible and instead a minimum of 5v5s were viable. Now the question is how can PGI profit off of this in such a way as to put time and effort into this?
