I, personally, shoot for the right-side on Mechs where I intend to take out a side torso because most Mechs are either symetrical or right-side-biased in terms of where they carry their big firepower.

I agree with that, but when I'm sniping I use those features depending on what map I'm on. Some maps I don't use it at all, spotting people is easier than looking in thermal all of the time on maps, typically the brighter ones are the maps that get my "unique" sniping method.
