Getting a bit annoyed today. I keep getting taken out at long range by PPCs, etc. They seem to be able to pick out a specifc part on me and hit it very quickly whilst I can only just make out a couple of pixels that is their entire mech

What do they have that I don't?

I'm using x3 zoom .....and have great eyesight before any asks :))

Its pretty much going to come down to practice and experience. There are some people out there in the game can sniper head shots on certain mechs just by knowing what to aim for. Have patience and good luck, things will get better for you.

many people don't like it and they are changing it soon, but if your gonna snipe as the game currently stands, you live in heat/thermal vision i guarentee the pilots ripping you to bits are doing exactly that

it's also familiarity with mech targets. Catapults have a wide CT and slim L/R torsos. Cataphracts are barns. if you aim at the crotch on the stalker you get good CT shots. Dragons have that nose. Aim for the skull on an Atlas for CT. you get the picture. Speed has a lot to do with it as well, if you're slow ( <70kph) i can hit you about 70% of the time at 1000m with ERPPC on a clear map, and especially with the censor range module. whatever you do, dont hold still or you're toast. mmmmmmm toast. :)

The other thing to consider is how you are traveling towards your opponents. Basically in a straight line means it is easy to pick a location. The other is if your angle of attack is consistent then the experienced pilots will know how far of a lead they need on you to hit you. And specific mechs, due to their construction means specific locations are more likely to be hit than others.

Oh my, thats unbelieveable. At a 1000m on my screen you look like 4 or 5 pixels. How do you see noses, crotches, etc Wonder if the point made above about thermal is the key? How are they going to change it shortly. I saw the screen shots, but don't quite follow

The fact is, experienced players "know" the shape of all the mechs and which part of the tiny little glob to aim for if they're aiming for a section. Also note if they fire multiple shots at the same time they should all hit the same section (such as PPC boat Stalkers)

It's genuinely not that hard unless you are walking perpendicular to the mech, lowering your profile to just the arm.

How does that old saying go for computers? "Your rules are not my rules."
Remember:
Your resolution is not my resolution.
What may be 4 or 5 pixels to you could be 30 or more for me if I'm running a higher resolution or settings.
Some people play at above 1080p, because that's for little girls with wimpy computers. Sniper enthusiasts tend to be running 2560x1600, leaving the consoles (PS5, xbox 1440) after the next gen consoles (PS4, new xbox 720) in the dust in 2013.

I can't accurately tear off arms with ER PPCs across the map but I can pinpoint side and center torsos for most mechs from 1,000 yards, especially if they're standing still or moving in a straight line.

You learn the body shapes and can tell at known distances where to aim. Try it out on the Testing Grounds at 200, 500, 700, and 1,000 meters or so.

Yeah, Thermal Vision Sniping can be very effective, especially if you're familiar with the Mech outlines and hardpoint mounts. This will change soon, as they reduce the effective range of Thermal Vision and improve the long-range visibility by allowing a more dynamic focus.

I, personally, shoot for the right-side on Mechs where I intend to take out a side torso because most Mechs are either symetrical or right-side-biased in terms of where they carry their big firepower.

@ MacroPhotoFly: Practice, practice, practice. Don't give up and eventually you'll get better. A good team helps too. Get on teamspeak if you can. Use terrain to cover your movements when possible. When crossing open terrain, or if someone is shooting at you, move unpredictably. You will still get hit sometimes(cause some people are just that good, yes, for real), but with random movements in direction and even small changes in throttle you can defeat their aim at long ranges.

Good luck, see you on the battlefield.

actually, i have quite the crapptastic computer. i run on lowest settings, and my PC just has 8g or RAM and cost me $300 on ebay. I also play on a Big screen TV, but With BAP and Advanced sensor range i can get a lock on non ecm mechs at 1100 meters and just aim for the middle of the targeting box. at extreme ranges i can also see Catapult bay doors. once within 1000m i can pick up the pixels, and see parts just fine.

Turn post processing all the way to the lowest setting, it gets rid of the distance blur :D

This is how. No config editting, no hacks. Testing grounds make this so much easier to show.

Notice the Awesome in the top left, he's 1555m out. You can clearly see his limbs, it would be trivially easy to pick them apart at that range.

Edit: That Catapult, of course, is 750ish meters out. There, headshotting him is cake. The Dragon as well, third back, would be a pretty easy target: I'd pick a side torso, as nearly everyone runs XL's in dragons.

This is just 1920x1080 on a 22" display. What's more, I'm running a wide FOV. At the stock FOV, you don't see as far around, but those central targets would look larger and easier to hit.

It's nice to get rid of the distance blur. I don't understand what the deal is with that - do the dev's have poor eyesight? At no distance is my vision blurry, things just get smaller.
