First I like to ask devas why my pilot has no head? I read in forum change FOV=100 so I do all looks great just like I want then I notice on start up pilot has no head why? Second I make configuration in mechlab my stalker it has 5 medium lasers 5 ssrm6 I play city map all good get a few kills ok works. Then I go next map alpine I die to easy no range so I build mech for long short range it equal good mech but no firepower. So I say Devs make it where I know what map I am going to play on then let me save my builds in mechlab then all I have to do it know map pick build I want hit launch button away I go very happy. Rest of game is ok getting better third were is everyone I think we need big chat room then I can ask questions fellow players get to know who just killed me and say hey very good game you!!!!! :D

He's is basically asking for a map choice so he can min/max his ride....

No..please devs..never ever do this. If people want to min/max fair enough, but for those of us sensible enough to run a varied build to cover all possibilities will lose out, as we will be forced into a playstyle we don't like.

Now..changing camo spec before a match...you might have something....I hate taking a bright purple mech into snow maps :D

I think you have good idea camo maybe when save build it will save different camo and paint job you pick only reason I ask this is you right for city I like short range weapons like ssrms pulse lasers for long range I like lrms and large lasers for medium range I like lrm5 medium lasers so I like to play many builds but it takes so long to build configs it no good because you unhappy try to build one that works for everything. If I want that I like to play stock only mode.

Map "selection" should be coming into play with community warfare, whenever that comes along. However, at that time, everyone will know what map they will be dropping into.

The reason that your "pilot" doesn't have a head is because you are supposed to be the pilot. The only reason that you can see that your pilot has no head is because you went into the user.cfg file and edited FoV manually.

Lastly, the forums are the "chat room" you're looking for. Why should the devs take the time to program one into the mechlab at this point?

Edit:

Please use punctuation and paragraphs. It makes written works much easier to read.

I think it would be a serious misstep to ever allow you to know if you're getting a short, medium, or long range map. Hopefully with CW there will be maps of all terrain types in various ranges so that you may know its a snow or desert map, but not WHICH snow or desert or whatever map.

This game has many cultures around the world that love to blow the living crap out of monster mechs, so give our nonenglish mechwarriors a brake. Till communtiy warfare, where we are payed to take a planet and the need to know terrian before our own dropships take off is in place :as mentioned above, knowing a map now would destroy what little surprises we have left in battles at this time.

Um, because he's English as a second ( or more ) language.

My French for example would be many times worse, and I've had well over a years study.

I don't want to know what map is up next. I want a couple more long range maps so it is an even chance of long and short maps. Hopefully, that will encourage mixed range builds.

Can it be frustrating at times? yes, but that is fine by me.

All it will do is make brawler maps an SRM/Medium Laser mess. You wont be using your brawler to sneak up on a long range Mech with LRM's and PPC's only, because there wont be any.

With specialisation, you breed in more strength, but also more weakness.

I have a couple of long range only and short range only Mech's. The long range Mech's are devastating when for targets stay at range, but when they close, I am the one being devastated. Same with my brawlers, up close I can hurt you real bad, but am useless at long range. That is the way it SHOULD be.

With mixed range configs, I can rough you up at range, and rough you up if you are close. Not as much as I can with a specialist Mech, but I am a bigger asset to my team if I can hit targets when they are there, as opposed to only be able to hit them sometimes.

Your pilot likely has no head to avoid clipping issues with the camera and save a few unnecessary polygons. Since the pilot is not supposed to be seen in full anyways, this is usually not a problem.

Because not everyone in the world speaks English as a primary language?
Just a wild stab, this.

You want to be able to see the back of your head while playing? Why?

one smurfs advice to another smurf is to use a balanced mixed arsinal, especially on slower mechs who can't easily dictate their engaguement range. on my stalker 5m i run 2 ERPPC, 4 SRM6 and SRM2, and 3 Mediul lasers. that's 100 damage an alpha, but you use your wepons in stages.
1200-400m 2 ERPPC will provide plenty of fire power since you can get lots of shots in (on alpine i can get 700 damage with just 2 ERPPC)
once you're at 400-200m range use both ERPPCs and 3 ml
and once within 200m stop using the PPCs and use the SRMS and lasers

Bryan Ekman said in the Ask the Devs 33 that they do plan to implement a system allowing you to pick a prechosen paint scheme after you find out what map you will be on, which is awesome in my opinion. You will also be allowed to "vote" on which map you want next. Dont know how that will work, but Im okay with it as long as people still have a chance of getting big maps on their splat cats.

If not having a head is disturbing to you, set FOV to 80 ... it still lets you see the cockpit and out most of your viewports.

For the build / map advice, there's some good stuff a few posts up ... unless you're part of a well-organized team, mechs that use exclusively long or short range weapons will almost always find themselves at a disadvantage. It is all about figuring out what you do best and enjoy most.
