The only constant on your team is you.

The other constant is how often I get dicked over in the MM now.

Come on, isn't it exciting when you have four random teammates that decide...

"Hey, look, LRMs!" "Ooooooh Shiny!"

*PUG runs out to play catch*

*PUG #1 dies*

*PUG #2, 3 and 4 all follow one by one doing the same thing only to die over and over*

*remaining four teammates scramble desperately to survive as the swarm of enemy mechs overcome and rip them apart*

ELO was supposed to fix this. But no, it made it far far worse.

No, it didn't make it worse. *shrug* My matches got better so I don't share the same sentiment.

On the surface that appears to be a clever pithy remark, but it's entirely possible that PGI screwed up Elo and it's systematically placing certain types of players together at a rate greater than chance.

True... or maybe aliens are messing with the system just to make Blastman lose. But wouldn't the simplest explanation be, given that many of us are having consistently good matches, that folks who are having these experiences match the level of player they're seeing?

To accept the idea of Elo Hell you would have to believe that the best pilot in the game, playing on the absolute worst player's account, could not improve the Elo. I don't think that would be the case. After all, half of the other team would be dead 1 minute into the match from test firing their weapons or just wandering out of bounds. The rest would be stuck against hills and buildings wondering why they weren't walking where they were looking. :(

Yep. I'm a Sub 100 damage player. You called me out! I AM TERRIBLE AT MECH GAMES! I play with a steering wheel, use my feet to drive and my thumbs to pull the trigger. I don't know how to aim up and down and torso twist is some ******* abnormality that makes no sense to me at all.

Thank you for the enlightening post. I truly feel that I can accept my pitiful existence now at the bottom of the pond scum ladder.

Not saying that. Your ability to do damage and your ability to be a team player and win games are two separate things imho.

You've been here since closed beta so you should know as well as I that the simplest explanation is that PGI screwed up.

ITT people who believe they are better than they are, complaining about their teammates not matching their own imaginary skill level.

Well I'll gladly 1v1 you anytime to test your theory given we ever get the ability to pre-arrange drops. :( I do just fine calling the shots for our 8 man group and playing on a team of competent players.

My only issue is with PUG games.

I truly believe there is an honest problem with the matchmaker that the developers need to figure out and fix.

The OP literally outdamaged his entire team and killed 6 out of 8 enemy players.

You'll hate me for saying this, but screwing up the ELO is kinda the point of having an open Beta...
But yes, Elo hell is real. The best way out of it is to start using the [Y]* and [B] keys more often, even too often. These two keys are more powerful than any alpha strike you can put together, use them often and your team starts winning... or not losing by as much.
*Note: Don't expect everyone to follow advice as expected. Once I watched a Dragon pilot reversing away from a wall of enemy mechs who were no doubt lining up headshots and advised him to avoid going backwards in a Dragon... So instead he took my advice way too dogmatically** and instead ran toward the towering wall of death rather than strafing it and heading for the safety of cover.
** in case the guy is reading this: Sorry dude, I should have been more specific with my advice.

Elo hell exists. It's the place were you are better than your teammates but no so much that you can carry them yourself. It's usually just below you true Elo, e.g. 1200 Elo would be hell if your true Elo was 1400.

And so it begins.... And still not one single player knows what their ELO score is.... and probably never will.

Considering that your Elo is based on your wins and losses, it's possible to make an educated guess. The upper limit is winning every game you play and the lower limit is winning zero games and the average is winning as many games as you lose. So, the closer you are to winning all your games while driving a particular weight class mech, the higher your Elo.

So for example, I have 97 wins and 35 losses logged in assault mechs since we got advanced stat tracking. This means that my current distance from the highest possible Elo score is 35 losses and my distance from the lowest possible Elo score is 97 wins.

In simpler terms, you could say that my Elo "Grade" for assaults is 97 out of 132 or 73% or a "B".

Who you win against is just as important, if not more important, than how many wins you have. That's a big part of why elo hell exists in certain games.

Yes but that's up to the matchmaker and out of my control. Presumably the matchmaker attempts to match everyone's Elo as closely as possible in every game. So the only action that I can take to get the maximum possible Elo would be to win every game that the matchmaker serves up. If the matchmaker isn't fair, and is in fact systematically (not randomly) matching players against much worse players, then there is a technical problem with the matchmaker.

In other words, you're wrong.
