Armor Allocation

been having difficult time allocating my armor and feel like i don't last as long as other atlas.

i do the best piloting i can to gaurd parts as they get hit and almost have the quickest engine i can w/the weapon/heatsink loadout i got. think i got 1.5 ton free still.

my atlas is maxed w/4module slots, armor is all maxed watching my heat is so-so but doable. i don't use endosteel or ferrous but i do have double heat sink. using 2 LL 3SSRM and an ultra 5x

was wondering how some of you allocate armor on your atlas torsos or if that is a closely guarded grandmas recipe. :(

do you guys like having a ppc on your atlas or do you rely on your ecm and ams and team alone?

I really prefer rounding my armor out; putting about 60% of it on the front components and 40% on the rear in most of my mechs. I feel so comfortable torso twisting/moving my armor that I find that that tends to be the most effective, as it keeps any one zone from being a lolonehit and gives me time to compensate for hits. It also royally screws people who expect to punch right through my rear, but it takes some competence when it comes to torso twisting/armor facing.

There are many ways of allocating it. Once I allocated it all to the rear and walked backwards into a match.

I hate to say it, but that was seriously my best match. However unless you're packing an AC-20 and 3 SRM-6's with a few pulse lasers, I wouldn't do it since if one hits you on the front, it's bad news.

That said, I used to use the strategy of Seox. It's a great, all around design. Worked great in closed beta, but I phased out of it and may even need to phase back into it. Currently I allocate at least 80% of my armor on the front, sometimes upwards of 92%. On an Atlas for example I occasionally go as high as 112 armor on the front center torso, especially on a long range build. Of course with any full frontal build it is super important to keep the enemy in front of you no matter what. Having an escort is also a great idea.

neat website, and thanks for showing. solid looking ranged build. i'm kindof a crappy long range aim. getting better

that looks like good allocation for the LR fight and i see you use gaus and lrm so i imagine you kinda hang back. i find 20 on the back is just not enough for my play style.

i like to get with the herd and try to make sure my ecm bubble is doing as much as possible but then i try to lead that heard into the fray and rumble and tumble med to short range, which means all sides of me start getting hit.

Did you use an XL engine? If the answer is yes, that is your problem.

yea i've just recently tried 75%front and that seemed to suck, like i said i like to kinda brawl and get in the fight, but then maybe thats just cuz it was one of those matches everything was long range and abuncha lights didn't get behind me. i'll give 80% a try thanks

i did infact try an XL, the best one... that was an expensive mistake... talk about buyers remorse...

i didnt keep the XL on for but a few matches. huge disappointment and waste of cbills.

What XL did you get? You should always keep those around for other mechs.

For my brawler, I do something like this. You can probably free some extra stuff up by downgrading the engine or switching to an AC/20. This should let you drop endo and free up slots. Still this build packs a punch, but is a bit ammo limited. Though if you live long enough to go through all of the ammo, something has usually gone wrong.

In any brawl it is very important that you are not the center of attention. If you pack your weapons to be 'too dangerous' you will always be the one that must die first. Believe it or not, on my Atlas I began ditching the cannon altogether and packing LRMs, which sets me as a low priority in a brawl. However my triple LPLs is like having a short range pair of Gauss Rifles. (Both deal 30 damage). But since it's not "Gauss Rifle" and instead "Pulse Lasers" people look at me, and then they look at the hunchback with the AC-20 and go for him. Or they go for the other Atlas with SRMs and AC-20. Or they go for the one with the single Gauss Rifle and medium pulse lasers without realizing I'm more dangerous. They'll chase the moron with the ER PPCs that shuts down on two or three shots, not knowing that I can deal more damage than him because I have 3 weapons that deal 10 damage each instead of 2 that deal 10 damage each. (Keep in mind I'm referring to my Atlas D build with the chest lasers. I don't have any other Atlas. Just my Founder's).

Also, it is important to not be the first person into the fight. If you are, then you are the first target. Remember that people will always set a higher priority on killing a DDC than any other kind of Atlas.

Now about that buyer's remorse, don't sell the XL engine. It's not good for an Atlas, but it can be useful for other mechs. Put it on the ones with the small side torsos and plop it in there.

i use an xl you just have to learn to torso roll

There's a lot of inconsistency in your build; case with XL engine is totally useless. Case prevents damage from ammo explosion to spread away from the section of the mech that suffers from ammo explosion. But that section will go off nevertheless. Therefore if you get critted in those SRM ammo slots, your left side will blow, and with it the XL engine, with or without case.

Not only, but adding the case there increases the chaces that when you experience a critical hit, you have 1 less crit to roll for it; if the case gets the crit (and case can't be critted) the critical hit will be re-rolled on the other components in that section.

Finally, XL's on atlases besides 360 are crap, no matter how good you're in torso twisting. Not only, but you also bear a GR in there, you'll literally blow up in no time, case or not case. Even more, you also bring ammunition in your arms that are supposed to tank the damage. Another inconsistency.

For sure your build is supposed to be a long range one, so the XL may be a decent choice anyway but reallocate ammunition and armor like this: AS7-K

But you can do nearly the same build with a much bigger STD engine: AS7-K

The above has more DPS, top and torso twist speed, more cooling, more resistance. That XL is a nice engine to be used in every other mech besides any atlas :)


Getting back IT, armor allocation depends a lot of what you want to play. If you're a brawler, then you may need to give the back to your opponents, therefore you want to shift some in the back (roughly 16-18/20-16); if your build is long ranged or you have an escort or you use a slow engine (say 300), then you should maximize front or cover with as much as armor as possible critical things such as a GR with say 72-12 in the RT, using 106 or even 108 armor on the front.
