Nuff said...regardless of what folks want it to mean. It is, has been, and will always be intended as an adjective to the following word, indicating that the subject fulfills that quality perfectly; and at best implies that it has nothing to do with the antithesis of that quality.

His is only the most recent of those, every time someone brings up MGs, they look at the Sarna article and pick out "quintessential anti-infantry" and cite that, ignoring what the word actually means.

Not quite. It's a variation of essential. More or less, to have more gravity than 'essential' does. It doesn't pertain to the quality of something at all.
