I hope so too, but it's still a business and I've seen weird things in the past. Thing is, if PGI alienates the core community, will the "new" community they might aim for actually support the game?
I'll tell you something about battletech, that applies to all these old series.
It's an ancient, pretty much dead franchise. What you see here are all the people who are interested in mechwarrior and battletech. There's no one else out there for THEM to recruit, or 'bring into the fold,' but we can convince our friends to give giant, stompy robots a try.
Them adding 3rd person to 'broaden appeal' is like if the next 40k game is about an ultramarine who's falling in love with an eldar woman. It doesn't do anything, except make the actual players angry, and said players will then tell their friends not to bother with the game.
I liked it better when they got rid of RnR. We saw quite the growth all of sudden. I got my friends to play the game, and despite the flaws and bad netcode, it was deemed to be a really good, counter-strike'esque shooter, with cool art.
Now? World of mechs, run by people who you can't really trust.
