Nope... because then we have a split community, then the next step is a No Heat, Unlimited Ammo mode because the NHUA players for Mechwarrior 4 are clamoring for the glory days and it's easy mode... the game as intended falls away because NHUA is the new meta, because you don't have to worry about heat or ammo, so you can boat whatever you want not no one cares, skill is no longer part of the equation and it's who can twitch faster, or poptart harder.
This game is slowly turning into MW4 part deux! THE POPTARTING!
You can have a fragmented community or you will have an insufficient community in all likelihood. It isn't like there is an enormous amount of money left to get from the founders.

we're just waiting on the announcement of a clan founders pack... you think the clan players won't eat that up?

MechWarrior Online is, and will always be, a game focused on 1st person combat in Mechs. That experience is sacrosanct to the classic Mechwarrior experience
Cheers,
The MechWarrior Online Team
That WAS a long time ago though
But I like the bolded part.

1. Allow a hud window with 3pv on it for those who prefer simulation mode. They get the same data then that a 3pv player gets.
2. Dont allow the 3pv to see anything which is not LOS from the cockpit. Grey it out. If you want to see over the hill you have to climb to a point you can see it - a fog of war implementation if you will to the 3pv. You could then go all the way to gods eye top down view, much like the minimap but in real colour, but see no more than a pilot in the cockpit.

This thread is not about whether or not 3rd person should it exist. Rather, we want your feedback on how it should be implemented. Understand we're not debating the merits of having 3rd person or not.
its not about wether it will or not because they dont care that we dont want it; theyre gonna cram it in there anyways

Ditto, but think about it, the markets for mainstream games are in the millions, if you could get a $1 a month from even 1 million casuals, that would easily match what a few hundred thousand core players could pump in. It's just a matter of scale. The portion you are fragmenting, would have never rolled into the game as it is now... so you really aren't hurting things that much, IF you do it at the right time.
War Thunder is the prime example of how this can and does work.

2) If you absolutely insist on adding 3rd person, do it through the module/consumable system. Like have 3rd person handled through consumable unmanned aerial drones. That way you actually have to give up something to gain the advantage of 3rd person.
The main opposition to 3rd person is that it breaks immersion. So if 3rd person is done in a tactful way that maintains immersion, like through unmanned aerial drones, then I doubt most players would have an issue with that.

yes, if you enter first person game.. obviously,, because 3rd is easier.. BUT why would you not allow to switch between 3rd and first if you enter the 3rd person game? I spent as much time as posssible in first person in mercs but I would USE 3rd because I had to because everyone used third..

Our target demographic has always been (in very simple non-marketing terms): the male action gamer looking for a little bit more than your average shooter. You can lump in someone who likes anything from Call of Duty to Flight Sims into that bucket.
What you've actually made, what you've achieved is a thinking man's shooter. It is excellent in its own way. But it doesn't fit in with your target demographic. I'ts aready much to complex, tactical and excellent to appeal to a casual action gamer. That just being the core gameplay. Too many variables for people who do not want to put up with understanding them.
But then there's people who want to. Focus on the one thing and do it right, and you'll have a growing playerbase of people who want to play a thinking man's shooter. Who come here for exactly this experience.
And it's not just us grognards. We have some new players in our ranks without any BattleTech background whatsoever. After a few weeks they knew more about hardpoint setups strenghts/weaknesses than i'll ever care to. One even got hooked to the novels... Now what did we do? We showed them the ropes in a 4-man, explaining the game.
You really need to make a tutorial, and that's it.

I have seen 2 polls on this topic and they have been OVERWHELMINGLY against 3rd person. Why are you guys so stuck on this when clearly the players (by majority) don't want it?
Because people who do not play the game must be catered to as well.

Why add 3rd person?
- Reduces friction for non-MechWarrior players, non-core players, and expands the MWO market to a broader audience. It helps to make the game more accessible and less intimidating.
- Offers up a different style of gameplay and tactics.

YEP! it's to "Cater to a demographic that does not exist for a mechwarrior game"

I've seen a lot of games suffer due to the creation of too many different servers, population gets spread out too much, friends can't play together if not in the same region, queue times increase and so on...
Also, this isn't related to the 3rd person issue, but I would like to know what PGI's plans are regarding cross-region play? For example, when the region split occurs, if I choose to play on the EU servers will I be able to switch over at will and join friends on the US servers? This is a huge issue for me, as I tend to work winters in north america, and spend the rest of the time in the UK, consqequently I have friends on both continents I'd like to be able to play with. The answer to this question will be the deciding factor in whether or not I continue to spend money on the game.
edit - back on topic, 3rd person view is something I hoped would never make it in to this game, either keep the game true to it's original simulation ideals, or go the whole hog and turn it into MechAssault 3. One or the other. Not both, it won't work.
