And LAMs: http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Land_Air_'Mech . But I doubt they will ever make it into MWO.

We already have strafing. Some mechs can almost look/shoot backwards.

Well... not all LAMs are unseen.
By 3080, we have the Waneta, Yurei and Pwwka. Although it may take PGI 30 years to appropriately code in the speed and flight variables necessary, let alone the transformation modes and limitations.

There seems to be a desire to cater to the gamers that aren't quite interested in MWO yet. They can hear the phone ringing with 3rd person coming 'soon'. But it might take strafing to get the Hawken, Battlefield, COD players into MWO. Can't wait to see Centurions doing the electric slide!

If you think that 3rd person view is for noobs then you have never played truly hardcore games like DarkSouls or DemonSouls.
Compared to these 2 MWO is a game for little chidlren.

Strafing.. no.. much better:

With the next patch PGI will revolutionize the mechwarrior genre with the addition of the "COVER SYSTEM"! LRM incoming? Just find the nearest rock and press the "cover button". You will then see a nice (3rd person) animation of your mech huddling down behind the rock to avoid the deadly rockets. If there are more rocks nearby, you can press the "cover button" + a direction and your mech will automatically rush to the next cover.

New tactics and mechanics will arise from this new and exiting improvement. Its MECH EFFECT BABY!

True, but I believe that it was said in Ask the Devs 34 that there will be no LAMs or Aerospace Fighters in MWO.

This would be the end of dog racing.

Games people need to have played to "level up" as a gamer:

EVE
Darkfall

i'm not sure I get this topic... is not torso twisting and running past your opponent while shooting strafing?

Probably a No Heat / Unlimited Ammo mode is next, 3pv was just a required step.

Just imagine all the new tactics and ways to play the game that NH/UA would open to us.

No, strafing is the ability to step sideways regardless of torso direction. The idea would usually be to lock the torso forward, just like PGI's 'arm lock' ™. So with the torso locked forward, players could turn and strafe at the same time, keeping the target in front of them at all times (among other moves).

But mechs have legs and could strafe whereas tanks can't.

I'm sure something could be worked out...

Have the spider bend over. Boom! Now they can strafe MW2 style.

Not nearly as well as people seem to think. Try running sideways sometime, I mean really sideways. :)

The things they have implemented, are viable, even 3rd person was in all previous titles. This would be too far from tradition, and would really **** off the old school players (myself included). Strafing isn't needed here anyway. When you can turn your torso 90° from your legs, and still have a stable platform, then strafing would become an obsolete option.

Touche, sir. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Huzzah the original poster. HUZZAH THE original poster!!!

You really stuck it to PGI!

Very much true. To move and shoot in a manner similar to the FPS idea of 'strafing' you would need to turn your legs to a side and keep your upper body facing the target. Which is pretty much what the mechs here do at the moment.

Look when my 100 ton mech stops getting stuck on a 20 foot fence then I won't need 3rd person mode.

Until such time I'd like to have it for rear view camera mode (since engine can't do that).

Here is an idea how about finally allowing stances with mechs. At least kneeling should be an option nearly every mech i know is able to kneel down.
