What if mechs has the ability to punch or kick? for instance the ones provided with arms has one of them (in some models) able to puch very near enemies. catapults and alike be able to kick, that way they could bump and make go down other mechs. of course such a thing could lead to a mech tilt other by kicking him all the time.
Theres almost no consecuences in getting face to face or crushing other mech, that has to change. Bumping could come back?

They do in the Tabletop, actually. With some models even having a specialty in melee combat. The Atlas and Awesome in particular are well known for their punches.

The Devs like the idea of melee combat, but say it's very hard to implement and won't be any time soon.

of course not, all the opposite. so making mechs crashing or charging against others has consecuences will force many players to think twice to approach extremely close to others. and could open battles in new ways.

Melee attacks are indeed a part of tabletop, and one of the reasons many mechs have hands instead of just gunbarrels (as well as the fact that being able to manipulate their environment like a person would is useful in many situations). A punch would do 1 point of damage for every 10 tons of weight a mech weight with the hit being distributed to the upper part of the target's body, which meant a greater chance for a headhit. A kick would do 1 point of damage for every 5 tons the mech weighs, which means an Atlas kick would hit like an AC/20, and the damage would hit the right or left leg of the opponent assuming the mechs were at the same height. That would, in tabletop, be enough to remove the leg of just about any light mech right off the bat, and seriously damage any heavier ones.

A mech with two fully functional hands could also choose to pick up a tree, a lamppost or even a severed limb from another mech and beat an opponent to death with them like a giant club. Now wouldn't that be satisfying? You kick the leg off that annoying light mech, pick it up and then proceed to beat it to scrap with its own limb. :P

And that doesn't even touch on the mechs which were made specifically for melee combat like the Hatchetman and Axman, which both carry mech-sized axes.

So far physical attacks are not on the horizon for MWO though, except charging/DFA which is supposedly coming back in April or so just in time for the arrival of the Highlander. There was a mention in one of the Dev Q&As that they were looking at the possibility of melee, however, possibly when they eventually add Solaris /. Don't hold your breath, though. That's probably far into the future if it ever happens.

Melee is a part of Battletech. Devs have said they want to add it but if it does come it won't be for a long time. Probably not until after the Solaris expansion they mentioned.

Step 1 - Add Urbanmechs
Step 2 - Have Atlas punt Urbanmech to the other side of the map
Step 3 - Cap for the win

Melee would be so awesome....

If you want to get the feel of melee, just equip LBX.

I think they tried melee (internally) a while ago and couldn't get it quite right. Perhaps they can add something good later.

Actually that would make some sense, since in the the novels it's stated repeatedly that melee combat is frowned upon in the Clans because it means the pilot has disgraced himself by not using his weapons properly or letting the opponent get that close

It also would help with making this feel more like a game where you're actually piloting giant humanoid machines because aside from jump jetting, there's nothing I can do in this game in a mech, that an equally futuristic tank can't.

It would be nice to have more weird stuff to use/experiment, the equipment I mean. More tunning to the configuration like adding mount points or switching them.
Having things being able to drop mines, throw something to make other mechs fall (like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolas ), sticky hud disrruptors that lasts for some seconds that kind of use once stuff or that take a bit long time to reload.
I think would add some fun and more chaos to the game.

I'd like to see mechs not glitch into each other at close range before we start trying to make them punch.

They couldn't get the simple collision thing right. Chances they could implement melee at this point are next-to-none sadly. I'd love to see melee in this game instead of stupid artillery strikes we are about to get but its not happening any soon.
