I have heard this a lot lately:

"LRM's are support weapons"
"LRM's aren't meant to kill"
"LRM's are made to strip armor"

Well...

ER Large Lasers are also "support" by this definition and I can do the job a helluva lot better at the moment than LRM's.

I strip armor by just wiggling the cursor around a bit with my laser. BOOM. Stripped armor.

Mortars are support weapons. I guess the ARMY goes around saying "Well we don't wan't mortars to kill anyone, we just want them to harry them a bit and strip off their flak jackets a little".

OR maybe we should look at other classifications support weapons in real life.

.50 Caliber mounted machine gun
]5.56mm M249 SAW
Grenade Launchers
Howitzers
Cannons
Bazookas and RPGs
Sniper Rifles
Laser Guided MIssles/Bombing

Yes. These are almost all listed as "support" weapons. What is a support weapon?

A support weapon is a weapon that normal soldiers do not carry (usally 1 or 2 in a unit, but not every single soldier), but a backup team or personnel use to support the larger team with the effect of superior or force multiplying firepower to increase damage, offer stability, destruction of forces that the ground team cannot handle or create openings that the team can take advantage of.

(/sarcam on) I am -sure- in all the above cases that the armies of the world get together in one room and say. Yes, these support weapons aren't for killing, they are to make the grunt on the ground with the M16 kill EVERYONE better because we want them to be in control and feel better about killing the enemies personally and up close.

LRM's are a support weapon. True.

Support weapons aren't supposed to kill anyone. *Laughs*

Thats like saying Nuclear Warheads are just tickle and pillow fights in a metal case.

Get real people. Get real.

Not that I don't agree with the point you are trying to make, but ALL weapons in military inventories are designed to defeat the enemy, not kill them necessarily. Ever wonder why we use 5.56? Because a wounded enemy takes 3 guys out of the fight while a dead enemy takes 1 guy out of the fight. Killing happens, and is certainly the goal of the Soldier in the field, but killing the bad guys doesn't win the war--destroying their ability to fight does.

If LRMs had other functions than just damage, I might buy into the support weapons rhetoric. LRM-emplaceable minefields would be a great addition; so would almost any of the special ammo types from TT rules. As it stands I have resisted removing LRMs from my builds only out of sheer stubbornness.

Yeah, if the point of LRMs is to force the other team into cover, strip off armor, etc, the issue is that they're pretty terrible at it compared to (say) a PPC, a UAC, or a Gauss.

Only thing that ppl want to say with "LRMs are support" is, Hey, you are fine with microdamage, i dont want to care about this weapon, and my weapos the only one wich should count.

As Op made clear, thouse ppl even dont understand what support in real means.
