Each mech from concept to implementation:
Costs around 60,000
8 weeks
10 personnel

Each map:
About a quarter of a million
3 months
7 personnel

The Devs from StarTrekOnline reported similar cost for the development of a spaceship. And I think that the mechs are looking better than any STO ship xD (No wonder with the Cryengine 3 xD)

The costs for a map seems high but I'm sure thats because there is more included than only the costs of the employe. Licences for the software, hardware, the leasing of the building even catering are included.

And if an amateur like Allfex could make better/cheaper/faster maps than PGI they would include them ;-) But it is one thing to play with a SDK and another thing to make it for a game where the players have to actually play them xD

S!

Waiting for the write up and answers with eagerness. Communication never hurts :)

Lyrik, it was sarcasm. Sure the devs have costs and stuff to cover. But bottom line holds, never underestimate the power of the fan base. IL-2 Cliffs Of Dover is a good example. They patch the game abandoned by the devs. IT was a buggy mess and got a bit better with patches, but income was too small so game was left to die. Community took over and is making great progress on the title. So why not accept community made stuff passing the QA of devs?

I know in an interview (might have been an ask-a-Dev) a while back.. they said that once they had all the textures "built" the time to make new maps would drastically decrease.. I think they also said there are two more (after our new desert) map to complete the 'full set' of textures/environments that they wanted..which would mean new maps could be getting their dev time reduced "soon"/

I sure hope so, I had the same thought from what they said.

I really shouldn't have drunk bought that Founders package for MW:T.

Anyway, I think the Card Game portion or MW:T makes monetizing it much easier than what we have here in MWO. I could be wrong of course but I hear the CCG markets is ballooning.

I believe Blizz recently announced a CCG version of Warcraft.

http://www.rockpaper...es-of-warcraft/

Looks like its one of those online CCGs, theres been a real life warcraft CCG since mid 2007.

I actually knew that but good point, what are the computer versions of CCGs called? Like Duels of the Planeswalkers and the upcoming Scrolls.

100% agree with you!!! Since i work on a own project, i know there is much, much more to it as simply playing a bit with the SDK but the point in my post is...

When a bloddy amateur like me can do something like this in 15 hours, on a crappy system, without any pay, what can do a little fan based modding team with professionell skills in maybe 2 week's, doing it with heart's blood and not for money or existence???

Have you ever looked in the FANART-forum? There are so much people that post stunning pictures, textures, conceptarts and so on, every day. There are so much talented fans out there.

This talk is incredibly relevant to this conversation.

"We cannot compete with our own customers for the production of content in this environment."

It'd be great if PGI tried leveraging the community for content. Though at this point, just giving us the tools and information necessary to beta test their content, in this open beta, would be nice.

I would hope there would be a rewards program if they accepted peoples work. "yes, give us your hard work and we shall watch the money flow in."

Virtual currency and premium time. Things that cost them nothing to hand out as candy to people contributing.

Make a top rated map in one category and you get (FIVE DOLLARS WORTH). Make the top rated maps in three categories (Brown, Gray, and Dark) and you get (FIFTEEN DOLLARS WORTH).

Had to keep those round feet though. Why not large spikes to kick other mechs?

Ya, I could see that. I wouldn't consider community assistance as anything other than milking an available resource without adequate compensation with game items/currency.

A player makes a map. It's approved for them to "flesh it out" and spruce it up to their liking.

That has probably saved them 150k or so.

Perhaps they feel people wouldn't take their product as serious with community submitted content?

The modding community picked up Cliffs of Dover, which saved it. Its doing fine now, just the way the original IL-2 is still going strong with the Ultra or HSFX mod. The IL-2/CLoD developers are now currently partnered with the Rise of Flight development team, which are now developing the next IL-2/CLoD game called "Battle of Stalingrad."

Why do people support the same companies who make games and abandon them like that to work on a new project similar to the abandoned one?
