I have to agree with your map, but it only represents solo play, not team play. Actual teams would be avoiding the obvious locations on the map. ie The middle. A team sitting in the middle of the map can be flanked from everywhere. Not a good place to be. But yes, solo lone wolf games would be similar to your map picture. I can see teams gravitating towards TDM while lone wolves stay away from it and play assault.
No, teams pretty much did it too. Sometimes, in a competitive league match a team would think outside the box and go into one of the other areas to flank. But that same 'sometimes' happens with PUGs too, both in MWLL and in MWO with the same frequency.
Here's a video of a scrimmage between two units in the area I circled in red:

Your challenge suggestion would only work if the game mode was actually TDM and not assault. The presence of the bases changes the line of thinking and decision making, forcing limited outcomes. I have already played the game with my team, and used every possible strategy in this mode(its a small number) to great effect. Pug stomping I believe its called. Use base cap to force enemy to split up, destroy fragments with main force. Or rush base with main force bypassing fragments and cap and a couple other common tactics. Its not rocket science. You cant get loners to play TDM because the mode is not TDM. Your challenge is redundant.
I challenge you to get 7 solo players to group up, and camp somewhere else on the map other than your base or the enemy base(Or the middle) and see what happens. You would end up killing a few straggler lone wolves while your base gets capped. You really cant play TDM in assault. You can try to reason it out, but its impossible.
Its doable if you force them to. What I wanted to see is if you could charm them into it. That would show that the players Ingame also favor the style of play. If its not possible, then the poll isn't showing the proper statistics. What you are suggesting is we need a game mode to FORCE players to play like TDM when the game mode pops up for them.
And I didn't say to stay in the base 8 mechs deep, I said stay close enough to it so you cannot be ghost capped. That still gives you alot of flexibility. And you can't make challenges until the one issued first is completed.
