In the last Ask the Devs answers (and other threads) it was said that client accounts would be able to be moved to a regional server but this would be a 1 time deal although you could have multiple accounts.
Pro's
- better pings for everybody.
Con's
-splits the player base
-can't play with friends in other regions
-few people have the desire to grind out multiple accounts just to play with friends
What I don't understand is why matches can't be played on regional servers but data (wins/stats etc) stored on a central server in NA?
Lets say we have 3 regional servers, NA, EU, AP (Aus/pacific inc Asia)
Why can't the matchmaker form up teams based as it does now on the central server and assign matches to the regional servers based on the 9 best pings in the group? This would mean that server load would migrate through the regional servers as peak demand moves through the day. If as in my case you drop with the majority of Australian players most games I play during my prime time would be the AP server. If I get up early it would most likely be on the NA server, conversely if I stay up late I would be on EU.
This would give everybody a fair chance of playing on good and bad pings, allow you to play with anyone you like and keep the community whole.
What net coding issue prevents this style of approach, forcing completely separate servers?
